Softball Knocks off No. 24 UMHB in Comeback Win

LONGVIEW, Texas -- Comeback. Win.

Stymied through five innings at the plate, the LeTourneau softball team erased a three-run deficit with a four-run sixth inning to complete a 4-3 comeback victory over No. 24-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor in the opener of a three-game series on Friday night at the Joyce Family Athletic Village.

The win was the ninth in the last 10 games for LeTourneau (16-7, 6-4 ASC) as the YellowJackets are off to the best 23-game start to a season in program history.

Down 3-0 entering the bottom of the sixth against one of the top pitchers in the ASC in UMHB's Grason Long, the YellowJackets found a way. Murphy Williams led off the inning with a walk before Laney Taylor singled and Lexi Hutchins walked to load the bases with nobody out. Leighton Landreth put the YellowJackets on the board with an RBI single that plated pinch-runner Maddie Flanery to make it 3-1.

With one out and the bases still loaded, Alexa Neilon singled home Hutchins but Landreth was cut down at the plate from center field to keep the YellowJackets from tying the game. Now with two outs, Kylie Grisham came up clutch with her two-out RBI single to right field that scored Lauren Wilking just ahead of the throw to tie the game.

On the ensuing batter, UMHB reliever Kami Flores unleashed a wild pitch and Neilon sprinted home and slid just under the tag of Flores to give LeTourneau a 4-3 lead.

Williams (9-1) closed the door in the seventh as she struck out Bailey Eggleston with runners at second and third to preserve the win. Williams threw her seventh complete-game of the year and allowed three runs on six hits with six strikeouts.

Long went five innings and gave up three runs on five hits for UMHB (14-9, 7-3 ASC), while Flores got the loss in relief.

UMHB scored three runs in the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead. Lindsey Polleschultz had an RBI single before Lexi Harris produced a bloop double down the left field line that scored two runs to make it 3-0.

Landreth went 2-for-3 with an RBI as the YellowJackets totaled seven hits.

The win was the first for LeTourneau over a ranked opponent since beating No. 5 Belhaven in 2022.
