ALPINE, Texas --
Hailee Leger threw her second shutout of the season in game one and the LeTourneau softball team used a four-run rally in the seventh inning of game two to complete a doubleheader sweep of Sul Ross State on Friday in Alpine. The YellowJackets took game one, 4-0, before earning a 9-7 win in the finale.
LeTourneau moved to 6-0 on the year, marking the second-best start in program history.
GAME ONE: LeTourneau 4, Sul Ross 0
Leger tossed her second shutout of the season and the YellowJackets took game one, 4-0.
Leger (3-0) struck out a season-high nine and scattered four hits and three walks to pick up her third win of the year.
LeTourneau took a 1-0 lead in the second on
Alexa Neilon's RBI double that plated
Mickenzie Murry. The YellowJackets added a run in the fifth on a
Murphy Williams RBI single and another in the sixth as Neilon tripled home
Hunter Handley.
Kylie Grisham launched her first homer of the year, a solo shot, in the seventh for the final tally.
Neilon went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a pair of extra-base hits. Grisham, Murry,
Ashlyn Wood, and Williams all had one hit apiece.
Hunter Montes (0-2) got the loss in the circle for the Lobos.
GAME TWO: LeTourneau 9, Sul Ross 7
Down 7-5 in the seventh,
Murphy Williams hit a go-ahead, three-run homer as the YellowJackets completed the comeback with a 9-7 victory.
LeTourneau trailed by two entering the seventh. Back-to-back singles from Grisham and
Kenna Hendry paved the way for Williams to blast her second homer of the year to give LeTourneau the lead, 8-7. The YellowJackets tacked on one more as
Lexi Hutchins singled home
Lauren Wilking to make it 9-7.
Hutchins then retired Sul Ross in order in the bottom of the inning to preserve the win. Hutchins (1-0) went the final two innings and allowed just one run on one hit.
Williams was 2-for-4 with four RBIs in the game, while Hendry and
Laney Taylor had three hits apiece. Neilon had her second multi-hit game with two hits.
Williams got the start in the circle and allowed two earned runs with two strikeouts over five innings of work.
