BELTON, Texas --
Hailee Leger tossed six shutout innings and
Murphy Williams hit a two-run homer before coming on in relief of Leger to hold off a UT Dallas rally as the LeTourneau softball team opened the ASC Tournament with a 3-2 victory on Thursday morning in Belton.
The No. 3 seed LeTourneau (27-14) advances to play No. 2 seed East Texas Baptist on Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. in Belton.
Leger (10-7) was spectacular in the circle once again as she did not allow a run until the seventh inning. The right-hander scattered seven hits and two runs with three strikeouts over 6.1 innings. The junior nearly had her third straight shutout before UT Dallas rallied in the seventh inning and snapped Leger's 21.1 consecutive scoreless inning streak.
LeTourneau pounced on UT Dallas and starter Emilie Hoelscher in the first inning.
Kylie Grisham took the first pitch she saw and hit a double to center field to lead off the bottom of the first. After
Mickenzie Murry sacrificed Grisham to third,
Kenna Hendry ripped a double to right-center field to put the YellowJackets up 1-0.
Hoelscher and Leger dueled over the middle innings.
UT Dallas had its first real threat in the sixth as the Comets put runners at first and third with two outs, but Leger got Cole Johnson to bounce out weakly to end the threat and keep the YellowJackets up 1-0.
In the bottom of the sixth, Williams provided some insurance. Grisham led off with a single and stole second before Williams launched a two-run homer to extend the lead to 3-0. The homer was Williams' sixth of the year.
Those runs were needed as UT Dallas (24-17) put together a rally in the seventh. A single and a double opened the frame and a sacrifice fly from Riley Westmoreland before an RBI single from Jordan Evans made it 3-2Â and forced Leger out of the game. Williams entered the circle and got a fly out before the Comets loaded the bases with two outs. Williams got Megan Cavazos to ground into a fielder's choice to end the game and advance the YellowJackets.
Williams notched her first save of the year after going the final 0.2 innings.Â
Hoelscher (13-9) got the loss after going six innings allowing three runs on five hits.
Grisham finished 2-for-3 with two runs to lead LeTourneau.
