Softball Falls to ETBU in ASC Tournament

BELTON, Texas -- The No. 3 seeded LeTourneau softball team held a 2-1 lead on No. 2 seed East Texas Baptist, but a four-run third inning from the Tigers was enough to drop the YellowJackets, 6-3, in a winners' bracket game at the ASC Tournament on Thursday.

LeTourneau (27-15) was playing its second game of the day after defeating UT Dallas, 3-2, on Thursday morning. The YellowJackets will face No. 5 seed Hardin-Simmons on Friday at 10 a.m. in an elimination game.

Kenna Hendry was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Lauren Wilking went 3-for-3 with two runs scored to lead LeTourneau.

Down 1-0 in the top of the third, LeTourneau scored twice to take the lead. The YellowJackets loaded the bases with two outs in the frame as Hunter Handley and Mickenzie Murry worked walks sandwiched around a Wilking hit. Hendry delivered with a two-run single to center field to give LeTourneau a 2-1 lead.

The lead was short-lived, however, as ETBU (36-5) plated four runs in the bottom of the inning. Corley Carpenter had the biggest hit in the inning as her two-out, three-run double broke a 2-2 tie and gave the No. 10-ranked Tigers a 5-2 lead.

LeTourneau chipped away with a run in the fifth as Hendry produced her third RBI of the game with a double to right-center field that scored Wilking to make it 5-3.

Down 6-3 in the seventh, LeTourneau was on the wrong end of some fortunate plays for ETBU.

Handley was robbed of a hit to leadoff the inning as Jalen Perez made a diving catch in center field. Wilking followed with a double and Kylie Grisham singled to put runners at first and third. Murry hit a grounder to shortstop where ETBU's Tristen Maddox booted the ball, but it deflected right to second base where Courtney White snagged it and stepped on the bag before firing to first to complete the unconventional double play and end the game.

Murphy Williams (13-7) got the loss in the circle for LeTourneau. Laney Taylor came on in relief and threw 3.1 innings allowing one run on three hits.

Ashley Croft (18-1) picked up the win after tossing a complete-game. Carpenter finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs as the Tigers totaled seven hits.
