LONGVIEW, Texas -- The LeTourneau women's basketball team trimmed a 15-point deficit to only four in the second half, but could not complete the comeback in a 62-48 loss to Sul Ross State on Saturday inside Solheim Arena.
The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for LeTourneau (5-9). The loss does not count towards ASC standings as Sul Ross (5-10) is transitioning to Division II and is not eligible for ASC or NCAA championships this season.
Bailey Broughton scored a season-high 18 points and added seven rebounds and two steals to lead LeTourneau.
Haylee Jordan posted her ninth double-double of the year with 13 points and 15 rebounds to go with two blocks. Jordan's two blocks gave her 51 for the season, moving her into third all-time in a single-season in program history.
Sul Ross opened up an 18-3 lead early in the second period and never trailed in the contest. The visiting Lobos took a 27-25 lead into halftime.
LeTourneau got back into the game in the third period. The YellowJackets shot 50 percent from the field and trimmed the 12-point halftime deficit to four in the quarter. A
Mariana Espinosa 3-pointer followed by a Jordan bucket and two
Madelyn DeLosSantos free throws capped a 7-0 run that got LeTourneau within 30-24 with 6:12 left in the third.
Broughton scored 12 of her points in the second half and she had five straight on a 3-pointer and jumper to slice the margin to four (36-32) with 2:52 left in the third.
The lead stretched back to double-figures for Sul Ross at the end of the third, but LeTourneau had one last effort in the fourth. An 8-0 run over a two-minute stretch midway through the fourth got LeTourneau within 49-43 after a Jordan basket.Â
That would be as close as the YellowJackets would get. The Lobos hit 10-of-14 free throws in the final period to hold off the rally.
Espinosa added eight points and three steals for LeTourneau, while
Kylie Weeks had three assists.
LaTerra Satcher grabbed five rebounds and had one block and two steals.
Sul Ross got 23 points and six rebounds from Marley Rokas, while Cheyanne Bonilla added 10 points.
