SHERMAN, Texas --
Mariana Espinosa tied a career-high with 16 points, but the LeTourneau women's basketball team could not overcome a tough third quarter in a 65-48 loss at Austin College on Tuesday night in Sherman.
Espinosa led the way for LeTourneau (0-4) with a career-high-tying 16 points to go with five assists and six rebounds in the loss.
Future Asevedo added nine points and
LaTerra Satcher six for the YellowJackets.
LeTourneau trailed 19-16 entering the second quarter, but showed its defensive prowess by limiting Austin College to just five points in the quarter. The host Roos went over eight minutes without a made field goal, spanning the final two minutes of the first period and the first six-plus of the second.Â
The YellowJackets tied the game at 19-19 with a 3-pointer from
Kylie Weeks early in second quarter, but the Roos responded and took a 24-23 lead into the break.
The third quarter was all Austin College as the Roos outscored LeTourneau 21-7 in the period to pull away for good. LeTourneau briefly got the deficit to 10 on an Asevedo triple with 8:44 left in the fourth.
Sara Savage had five rebounds and
Brooklyn Iman tallied four. LeTourneau went 10-of-14 from the free throw line, led by Espinosa's 4-for-4 effort.
Austin College (2-1) got a double-double from Brooklyn Matthews with her 12 points and 16 rebounds. Avory Miller had a team-high 15 points as the Roos connected on 42.1 percent (24-of-57) from the field with eight 3-pointers.
