LONGVIEW, Texas -- The No. 4 seeded LeTourneau men's soccer team kicked off the ASC tournament with a 1-0 victory over No. 5 seed Howard Payne on Tuesday evening.
The game-winning goal came off the right foot of senior midfielder
Emad Mohamed, as he drew a foul inside the box and converted a penalty kick in the 29th minute.
LeTourneau came out aggressive in the first half, firing four shots in the first 20 minutes of the match, putting pressure on Howard Payne keeper Dane Tinkis.
This pressure would soon pay off, as Mohamed drew the foul in the box and subsequently converted the penalty kick to give the YellowJackets a lead they would not relinquish.
The goal was Mohamed's second of the season and eighth of his career. This game-winning goal propelled LeTourneau to their first ASC tournament win since 1998.
On the defensive side for LeTourneau,
Jonas Coyle,
Kristian Princ and
Bridger Roberdeau made key plays that stuffed several Howard Payne attacks and helped secure the shutout.
Edson Camara Martinez gathered in four saves to earn his fifth clean sheet of the campaign.
Another notable play came in the second half, as
Ethan Carrillo scored a goal off of a Howard Payne deflection, but had the goal erased by an offsides call that would have given the YellowJackets a 2-0 advantage.
Howard Payne's best scoring opportunity came late in the second half, as they rattled one off the post on a breakaway chance. Their final chance of the match came in the 90th minute, as Camara Martinez's final save was being reviewed by the officals to determine if it had crossed the goal line before the clock had hit zeroes. After the review, they determined that the save was made and the match was over.
