Jones Hits Record-Breaking Homer, but Baseball Falls Late at Redlands

REDLANDS, Calif. -- Dane Jones hit his 23rd career home run, breaking the LeTourneau baseball program's NCAA-era record, but a pair of late homers for Redlands propelled the hosts over the YellowJackets, 5-3, on Friday afternoon at The Yard.

LeTourneau (0-3) is making its first trip to play in the state of California since 2003.

Jones wasted little time in breaking the program's NCAA-era career record for home runs. In the top of the first, Jones blasted an offering from preseason All-American Tyler Reiter off the light pole in left-center field. The two-run shot was his second of the season and the 23rd of his career, breaking Josh Ross' ('03) previous record of 22.

The program's NCAA era began in 1999. The all-time record spanning all seasons is 39 from Mike Huffman ('97). Redlands (3-1) responded with two runs in the home half of the first with RBI singles from Tyler Preece and Gabriel Ceja.

LeTourneau starter Dalton Pickett settled down after the first inning and tossed five straight scoreless innings. The right-hander exited the game after going six innings allowing two runs on five hits with two strikeouts.

LeTourneau grabbed the lead again in the fourth inning. Dylan Carrell reached on an error and two batters later was driven in on Devin Greaff's run-scoring double to right-center field to make it 3-2. The YellowJackets had the bases loaded with one out later in the inning, after Jones was intentionally walked, but could not add to the lead.

In the seventh, Redlands knotted the score at 3-3 with Luke De vries scored on a passed ball with two outs. In the eighth, solo homers from Nathan Miller and Cade McCelland were the difference as the Bulldogs held on for the win.

Reiter (2-0), a preseason D3baseball.com All-America selection, went eight innings and threw 120 pitches as he allowed one earned run on five hits. Jakob Russell picked up his second save with a scoreless ninth inning.

Zac Schneider (0-1) picked up the loss for the YellowJackets. Dylan Cortes also came on in relief and retired the two hitters he faced in the eighth.

Blake Vice and Greaff each had two hits as the YellowJackets tallied five in the loss. For Vice, the hits were the first of his collegiate career.
