LONGVIEW, Texas -- For a second straight season, the LeTourneau men's tennis team has opened the year with a 3-0 record as the YellowJackets defeated McMurry, 8-1, on Saturday at a cold Davis Tennis Complex.
LeTourneau (3-0) also started 3-0 last season and began the 2022 season 2-0. The match did not count towards ASC standings as the teams are in separate divisions.
In the home opener of 2024, the YellowJackets started strong and never let up.
All three doubles matches went to LeTourneau.
Zach Farris and
Chase Rogers combined for a tight, 8-7(3), win at the top flight over Nicolas Villalovos and Eh Kuh Soe to cap the doubles sweep.Â
John Lewis and
Timothy Black earned an 8-1 win over Angel Flores and Jack Greenwald to open the match at No. 3.
Alex Barrero and
Brayden Money earned an 8-4 win over Mason Bagwell and Eli Frosch at No. 2.
In singles, the YellowJackets secured the match with wins at the top three flights.Â
Farris downed Villalovos by a 6-2, 6-0 final while Rogers earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Soe at No. 2. Barrero finished off the top three flights with his 6-4, 6-1 win over Bagwell at the third spot.
Lewis and Black also picked up singles wins. At No. 5, Lewis defeated Greenwald 6-3, 6-1 after Black toppled Khoen Gregory by a 6-3, 6-2 decision at the No. 6 flight.
The win was the second in the last three meetings for LeTourneau over McMurry (1-4).
UP NEXT
LeTourneau heads to Belton next Friday to take on Mary Hardin-Baylor in a non-conference match (1 p.m.).
