ALPINE, Texas -- A 17-2 run from the end of the first half through the first minutes of the second half helped the LeTourneau men's basketball team pull away and earn an 84-65 victory at Sul Ross State on Thursday night in Alpine.
The win was the third straight for LeTourneau (14-8) and completed a season sweep of Sul Ross (12-11).Â
Deonte Jackson scored 17 of his game-high 29 points in the first half and he added five assists and two steals in the victory. His 29 points moved him past Aaron Knaub ('96) for sixth on LeTourneau's career scoring list with 1,661 points.
Logan Brinkoeter scored a career-high 15 points, going a perfect 5-of-5 from the field with two 3-pointers.
Caedmon Liebengood and
Branson Lynn had nine points each as the YellowJackets had 10 different players score in the victory.
The YellowJackets got off to a bit of a slow start in the first half as the host Lobos led 17-15 with eight minutes left in the period. A Jackson 3-pointer with seven minutes left gave LeTourneau a 20-17 lead and they would not trail again the rest of the way.
The first half ended with a flurry of points for the YellowJackets. Leading 29-28 with two minutes left in the half, LeTourneau rattled off 11 straight to go into the break with a 40-28 lead. Jackson had five points during the stretch, including a steal and layup that led to an old-fashioned three-point play.
That momentum carried into the second half.
Alex Ferrell made a layup on LeTourneau's first possession of the second half and a pair of Jackson free throws capped the 17-2 run between the two periods that gave LeTourneau its biggest lead to that point at 46-30 with 17:57 left in the game.
The lead extended to 19 on a few occasions and LeTourneau's advantage never dipped below double-digits the rest of the contest.
LeTourneau shot an even 50 percent (30-of-60), the ninth time this season the YellowJackets have made at least 50 percent from the field, and drilled 10 3-pointers. The YellowJackets were also perfect from the line at 14-of-14, including Jackson going 7-of-7.
Ferrell finished with seven points, while
Christian Adams had four points with a team-high seven rebounds, four assists, and a block.
Sul Ross got 21 points from Gabe Sanchez and 20 from Tyler Jackson in the loss. The Lobos connected on 48.9 percent (23-of-47) with six 3-pointers.
