GEORGETOWN, Texas -- The LeTourneau softball team scored a combined 19 runs on 24 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Southwestern on Wednesday in non-conference action.
LeTourneau scored 13 runs over the final three innings in a 14-3 game one victory before scoring all five runs in the final three frames in a 5-2 win in the finale.
The YellowJackets move to 7-6 on the year.
GAME ONE: LeTourneau 14, Southwestern 3
Maddi Smith hit two home runs and the offense exploded for 13 runs over the final three innings, including seven in the seventh, to come away with a 14-3 victory in the opener.
Smith finished 2-for-4 with two homers, her first two collegiate home runs, and four RBIs.
Leighton Landreth and
Jenna Carter also had two hits apiece as the YellowJackets totaled 12 in the win.
Carter gave LeTourneau the lead for good with her RBI double in the fifth inning before she scored on
Payton Bauer's RBI ground out that made it 3-1.
In the sixth, Smith launched a two-run homer to left field and
Maddie Flanery made it 7-1 with her two-run single later in the frame.
The YellowJackets scored seven times on six hits in the seventh to break open the game.
Lexi Hutchins and Smith both homered in the inning and
Paiton Altmiller added a two-run single to highlight the inning.
Hutchins (1-2) went the distance in the circle allowing two earned runs and striking out three.
Jaden Wheeler (0-5) got the loss for Southwestern.Â
GAME TWO: LeTourneau 5, Southwestern 2
A scoreless game until the fifth, LeTourneau scored five runs over the final three innings to complete the sweep with a 5-2 victory.
Smith had the go-ahead RBI single in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie and added another RBI single in the seventh as she went 2-for-3. Bauer and
Kylie Grisham also had two hits apiece as LeTourneau totaled 12.
Kenna Hendry gave the YellowJackets a 2-0 lead in the fifth with a two-run double. After Southwestern knotted the score at 2-2 in its half of the inning, Smith and Carter both produced RBIs in the sixth to regain the lead.
Laney Taylor (3-1) went 5.2 innings out of the bullpen to collect the win. She allowed just two runs on five hits with two strikeouts.
Madison Vela (1-7) picked up the loss for the host Pirates.
