Softball Swept in Doubleheader at Trinity

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The LeTourneau softball team was swept by Trinity in a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon.

In both games, LeTourneau (7-8) had the opportunity to tie or take the lead with one swing of the bat in the seventh inning, but came just shy as Trinity (13-7) held on for a pair of wins.

GAME ONE: Trinity 7, LeTourneau 3

LeTourneau, despite outhitting Trinity 8-7, fell in game one 7-3. The YellowJackets left eight runners on base.

The Tigers scored early in the first after a leadoff walk and a stolen base for Samantha Tagawa. Trinity would bring her and another runner across the plate to take a 2-0 lead.

The YellowJackets opened up the hitting in the second as Mickenzie Murry singled to right field. Leighton Landreth then got a hit after Murry stole second leaving runners on the corners.

This opened up a designed steal play as Landreth attempted to steal second forcing a throw from the catcher allowing Murry to make it home and score the first LeTourneau run of the day to make it 2-1 after the top of the second.

Trinity scored a run off of two hits in the bottom half of the frame.

LeTourneau trailed 6-1 after five innings before Kylie Grisham and Maddi Smith both got hits to start the inning. Smith with a double leaving two runners in scoring position.

Grisham then scored on a wild pitch as Smith moved to third.

In the final inning, Maddie Flanery started a two-out rally by drawing a walk and stealing second, her second stolen base of the day and 18th on the year.

Payton Bauer hit an RBI single down the third-base line bringing Flanery home to make it 7-3.

Grisham and Smith both drew walks loading the bases up with the tying run at the plate.

The Tigers brought in Josephine Koelewyn (1) to the circle who secured the save with a seven-pitch strikeout.

Jordan Arce (7-3) started in the circle and was credited with the win for Trinity as she went 6.2 innings, allowed three hits, three earned runs, and got 10 strikeouts.

Hailee Leger (2-4) had the ball first for LeTourneau. Leger went 5.0 innings, allowed six hits, six runs, five earned, and struck out one batter.

Paiton Altmiller came in relief for 1.0 innings, allowed one hit, one earned run, and got a strikeout.

GAME TWO: Trinity 3, LeTourneau 2

LeTourneau took advantage of some timely hitting but ultimately ended up short as the host, Trinity, held on for the sweep.

The YellowJackets got started early as Grisham doubled down the left field line and stole third base. Smith followed that with a walk.

Smith then got herself into a rundown with two outs in an attempt to steal second base allowing enough time for Grisham to make her way home and take an early 1-0 lead.

Trinity responded in the bottom half as they scored an unearned run off of three hits and one error to tie it at 1-1.

The Tigers also notched a run in the second and in the third inning to make it 3-1.

In the top of the sixth Jenna Carter put a ball up the middle for a base hit. Carter then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch.

This brought the top of the order up with no outs in Flanery who drew a five-pitch walk.

Flanery showed off the wheels as she stole second and Carter stole home for a double steal to bring it to a one-run game at 3-2.

The Tigers threatened to add insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth with Tagawa getting on base and finding herself at third after a stolen base and a passed ball with only one out made by LeTourneau.

Sydney Watson put what seemed to be a sacrifice fly out to center field as Tagawa made the tag and went home, but Flanery made the catch and the throw to Katie Stiba, who made the tag to secure the double play at home.

However, it was to no avail as Megan Kriechbaum secured the save in the top of the seventh.

Cameron Bishop (5-1) was in the circle to start for the Tigers. Bishop went 5.0 innings, allowed one hit, one earned run, and got two strikeouts.

Hannah Decker (0-1) had the start for LeTourneau. Decker went 2.0 innings, allowed six hits, three runs, two earned, and got a strikeout.

Kirstin Ferguson came in relief as she went 3.1 innings, gave up four hits, no runs, and marked a strikeout.

Laney Taylor finished up the game getting a pair of outs, allowing no hits, or runs.
