Softball Bested by SRSU in Series Finale

LONGVIEW, Texas-- The LeTourneau softball team tried to rally late but fell to Sul Ross 5-3 at home on Saturday.

LeTourneau (3-5) took a lead in the second inning when Maddi Smith hit a sacrifice fly out to left field allowing Leighton Landreth to come home to make it 1-0 through two frames.

Sul Ross (5-6) was able to take advantage of a couple of errors in the third inning to secure a 3-1 lead. 

The Lobos continued to add more run support in the fifth inning taking advantage of a couple of errors while also getting two hits to score two to make it 5-1.

The YellowJackets looked to rally in the final frame as Smith drew a walk to lead off the inning. 

Lily Longoria stepped up to the plate and played one into right field to move Smith into scoring position.

Jenna Carter loaded the bases with her single up the middle, prompting a pitching change.

Maddie Flanery was next as she drew a walk on a full count to score a run making it 5-2.

Mickenzie Murry put one in play, as she grounded out, bringing home Longoria. leaving the tying run on second in Flanery and the lead run at the plate.

The late-game YellowJacket heroics would be snuffed out by Lobos pitcher, Leanza Chambers. She drew a fly out and struck out Landreth for the final out.

Lexi Hutchins (0-2) was credited with the loss as she tallied two strikeouts, allowed four hits, and three runs none of them earned.

Kirstin Ferguson came in relief as she also struck out two batters, and allowed three hits, two runs, and one earned.

Laney Taylor would close the game with 2.1 innings in the circle. She allowed no hits and struck out two.

Hannah Clark (2-1) got the win for Sul Ross for 6.0 innings of work. Clark allowed five hits, three runs, and got a strikeout.

UP NEXT

LeTourneau will travel to Concordia with a doubleheader slated for Friday (4 p.m.).
