McMurry Outlasts Softball to Sweep the DH

LONGVIEW, Texas -- The LeTourneau softball team lost twice to McMurry with game two going to 11 innings.

McMurry took game one 8-0 and game two 12-11.

GAME TWO: McMurry 12, LeTourneau 11

LeTourneau jumped to a 5-0 lead after two and a half innings, before McMurry answered back with three runs in the bottom of the third and six runs in the bottom of the fourth to hold a 9-5 advantage over LeTourneau.

The YellowJacket offense kept moving runners around in the fifth inning as Maddi Smith singled to left field.

Jenna Carter pushed her along with a sacrifice bunt. 

Kylie Grisham walked after Smith had moved to third on a wild pitch. Grisham seized the opportunity to take the open bag with a steal to leave two runners in scoring position.

Lexi Hutchins answered the call with a two-RBI double to center field.

The YellowJackets entered the top of the seventh trailing by two (10-8).

Grisham drew a lead-off walk on a full count and stole second. Alexa Neilon followed that with a walk before Jaci Taylor also drew a walk to load the bases with two outs.

Lane Taylor put the ball in play for an RBI as she reached on the fielder's choice with no outs recorded.

Smith extended the game with a single into left field to tie it 10-10.

Both the eighth and ninth innings went scoreless as the international tie-break rule came into effect in the 10th inning, placing a runner on second to start.

Jenna Carter brought home the placed runner, Rylie Shipp, on an infield single to take an 11-10 lead.

McMurry brought in their placed runner with a sacrifice fly to extend the game to the 11th, tied at 11-11.

Despite loading the bases in the top of the 11th LeTourneau came away with no runs. McMurry then laid a sacrifice bunt and got an infield single to walk off the game.

Hailee Leger (5-9) came in relief and pitched 7.0 innings, allowed four hits, three runs, and got seven strikeouts.

Jenna Lewis (11-4) was credited with the win with her 4.0 innings of work. Lewis allowed one hit, one run, and had five Ks to her name.

GAME TWO: McMurry 8, LeTourneau 0

A seven-run second inning propelled the Warhawks to an 8-0 win.

Taylor, Carter, Hutchins, and Maddie Flanery each had a hit for the YellowJackets.

Leger started the game in the circle and allowed four hits, eight runs, zero earned, and had four strikeouts.

Hannah Decker later came in relief and pitched 2.1 innings, allowed one hit, no runs, and got a pair of strikeouts.

UP NEXT

LeTourneau will finish the series with McMurry on Saturday (12 p.m.).
