HALLSVILLE, Texas --
Dane Jones homered to tie the LeTourneau baseball all-time career record, but the YellowJackets could not overcome Hardin-Simmons in a 7-5 loss on Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.
The game was moved to Hallsville due to field conditions at Conrad-Vernon Field after rain throughout the day on Saturday.
Jones' home run, a two-run shot to center field, was part of a four-run sixth inning that got the YellowJackets on the board and within 6-4 of the visiting Cowboys. It was career home run No. 39 for Jones, as he tied Mike Huffman's all-time mark, and the 18th home run of the year for the senior.
LeTourneau (14-22, 7-14 ASC) could not complete the comeback, though. Down 7-4 in the ninth, Jones delivered an RBI single to get within 7-5, but Hardin-Simmons reliever Jaydon Stephens ended the rally to preserve the win for the guests.
Jones went 2-for-5 with three RBIs, while
Ethan Wood and
Zach Zarko also had two hits each.
One of Wood's two hits was a two-run single in the sixth that brought the YellowJackets to within 6-4.
Hardin-Simmons (13-22, 8-13 ASC) scored in the first inning on Kyler Reed's infield single and then added three runs in the second for a 4-0 lead. The Cowboys extended the margin to 6-0 with two in the sixth.
Aman Patel (1-8) made the start and struck out four across 5.1 innings of work.
TJ Spitdowski and
Dylan Cortes combined to allow just on run in 3.2 innings out of the bullpen.
Grant Mitzelfelt (3-5) got the win after going 5.2 innings and allowing two earned runs. Stephens notched his fourth save as he went the final 3.1 innings.Â
