Comeback Win: Softball Rallies Past UMHB to Stay Alive in ASC Tournament

MARSHALL, Texas -- Down 2-0 in the fifth inning, the No. 5 seed LeTourneau softball team scored four runs over the final three innings, including Maddie Flanery's two-run go-ahead single in the seventh, to defeat No. 3 seed Mary Hardin-Baylor, 4-2, in the ASC Tournament on Friday afternoon at Taylor Field.

LeTourneau (23-18) advances to play No. 4 seed Hardin-Simmons in an elimination game on Friday at 5:30 p.m. in Marshall.

Lexi Hutchins started the comeback efforts with a solo home run in the fifth inning that got the YellowJackets within 2-1. It was her team-leading eighth home run of the year.

Maddi Smith then tied the game in the sixth with a towering solo home run down the left field line. The solo shot was Smith's fifth of the season.

In the seventh, Flanery came up with the clutch hit. Payton Bauer singled to start the inning and the YellowJackets loaded the bases with one out for Flanery. The sophomore took the first pitch and drove it into left-center field to plate both Hutchins and pinch-runner Corinne Van Cleef to give LeTourneau its first lead of the game at 4-2. Kirstin Ferguson (2-0) retired Mary Hardin-Baylor in order in the seventh to seal the win. Ferguson went the final three innings and allowed just one hit to record the victory.

Hutchins started in the circle for the YellowJackets and allowed just two runs in her four innings. At the plate, Hutchins went 1-for-2 with two runs scored.

Flanery finished the day 2-for-4, while Smith also had two hits in her three at-bats.

Mary Hardin-Baylor starter Eileigh Whyte (17-6) went all seven innings and allowed four runs on eight hits.
