Moving On: Softball Blanks Hardin-Simmons to Advance in ASC Tournament

MARSHALL, Texas -- Kirstin Ferguson tossed a two-hit shutout and the No. 5 seeded LeTourneau softball team scored in every inning en route to a 9-0 victory over No. 4 seed Hardin-Simmons in the ASC Tournament on Friday.

LeTourneau (24-18) advances to face No. 6 seed Concordia Texas on Saturday at 2 p.m. The winner of that game will face No. 1 seed East Texas Baptist in the championship round.

The YellowJackets started quickly and did not let up. LeTourneau scored in all five innings and tallied eight hits in the win.

Kylie Grisham lifted a sacrifice fly in the first inning to plate Maddie Flanery to give LeTourneau a 1-0 lead.

In the second inning, Mickenzie Murry delivered a two-out, two-run double to deep left-center field. That hit plated both Lexi Hutchins and Leighton Landreth to extend the lead to 3-0. In the third, Maddi Smith had an RBI ground out and Payton Bauer came through with a two-out RBI double that scored Landreth to make it 5-0.

That was plenty for Ferguson. After getting the win earlier on Friday against Mary Hardin-Baylor, Ferguson (3-0) was sharp again as she went all five innings and allowed just two hits to notch her third win of the year.

In eight innings pitched on Friday, Ferguson did not allow a run and surrendered just three hits. LeTourneau also blanked Hardin-Simmons for a second time in the tournament and YellowJacket pitching allowed just four hits in 12 innings against the Cowgirls.

Flanery added an RBI single and Grisham an RBI ground out in the fourth. A wild pitch in the fifth brought home Bauer for the final run.

Flanery went 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs, while Hutchins also had two hits. Jenna Carter, Landreth, Bauer, and Murry all had one hit each.

Jorey Hood (6-4) picked up the loss for the Cowgirls after she went 1.1 innings and allowed three runs.
