LONGVIEW, Texas -- LeTourneau women's soccer suffered a heartbreaking loss to St. Thomas, 1-0, on Sunday at the LETU Soccer Field.
The YellowJackets (6-6-1, 1-5 SCAC) fought as valiantly as one could have hoped, with the defense holding off the Celts (6-1-3, 3-0-1) for majority of the match.
Kinsey Fulks recorded six saves between the pipes for LeTourneau, and she had plenty of help, as
Sophia Merjil,
Clarissa Martinez,
Michelle Olivas and
Lana Whiteman played all 90 minutes.
Fulks would go to work early in the first half, making three saves within the first eighteen minutes, but she held her ground. The rest of the squad fought through the heat and the quick St. Thomas attackers to prevent any more dangerous chances.
The YellowJackets would create a couple of first half scoring chances, but no shots on goal. The half would end scoreless.
The second half again opened with the Celts making more runs at Fulks and the defense, but they were once again up to the challenge, and Fulks added her fifth save in that stretch.
Whiteman and
Chanel Kemball-Cook would then begin the LeTourneau onslaught of shots. Kemball-Cook's (63') resulted in a potential rebound chance for
Terra Tucker, who scored, but was ruled offsides, nixing the game-tying goal.
Kemball-Cook would get another chance in the 68th minute, but her low shot was stopped by Celt keeper Kylie Soich.
Reagan Parks also tried one of her own in the 81st minute, but Soich again made the stop.
St. Thomas would record the eventual game-winning goal in the 82nd minute, as a long pass from Joselin Cardentey deflected weakly off the foot of Sydney Ferguson around Fulks and into the net.
The YellowJackets tried to generate as many chances as possible in the final few minutes, but could not find a good look.
Soich ended up with four total saves for the Celts.
