Women's Soccer's Second Half Rally Falls Short in Kerrville

KERRVILLE, Texas -- Two second-half goals were not enough as LeTourneau women's soccer's valiant effort fell short, 4-2, on Friday evening in Kerrville.

Senior Brandy Moran and junior Chanel Kemball-Cook recorded goals for the YellowJackets (5-4-1, 0-3-0 SCAC), but the Schreiner Mountaineers' (3-4-0, 2-1-0 SCAC) three first half goals proved too much to overcome.

After a pair of Schreiner goals in the first 10:13 of play, one by Jess Sinclair and the other by Kailey Ellsworth, LeTourneau needed to work their way back into the match.

Kinsey Fulks would do her part, stopping Haley Withers' shot in the 27th minute. Kemball-Cook would nearly got the YellowJackets on the board about six minutes later, but her shot was saved by Emilie Novasad.

Withers would get another late chance in the first half, and make good of it, to put the Mountaineers up 3-0, and Novasad would make another stop on Kathy Villareal's attempt to end the half.

23:18 into the second half, the offense for LeTourneau would break through, as Kemball-Cook scored her seventh goal of the campaign to bring it back to within two. Freshman Malaika Barlow, making her collegiate debut, recorded the assist.

The defense did their best to keep the potent Mountaineer offense at bay with senior keeper Kelauna Cruz manning the net, but Schreiner's Ava Bara would score in the 79th minute to extend the lead to 4-1.

LeTourneau kept on fighting, however, and Moran would earn a penalty kick chance in the 89th minute, which she converted, to bring it back to 4-2. Unfortunately, time was not on the YellowJackets' side, as that score would hold for the final.

Clarissa Martinez, Sophia Merjil, and Zoe Harbison grueled through 90 tough minutes on the defensive end for LeTourneau, and Fulks notched a save in her 45 minutes of action.
