LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- LeTourneau men's basketball controlled matters throughout the game and defeated Oglethorpe, 84-69, at their first game of the 84 Lumber Classic at Covenant College.
Jackson Mayes once again led the way in scoring with 24 points, while
Branson Lynn added 15 and
David Martinez scored 13.
Logan Brinkoeter helped clean the glass with 12 rebounds.
For the first 4:23 of the first half, the Stormy Petrels (1-3) and YellowJackets (3-0) were neck and neck, and ended up tied at 10 after a pair of free throws by Oglethorpe's Jackson Kemp.
However, the next 15:37 of play would be significantly different, as LeTourneau dialed in and started to find their groove. A 6-0 run began matters, as Brinkoeter,
Teigan Edwards, and Mayes all hit shots.
The Stormy Petrels had few answers, struggling to generate any kind of scoring run against the stifling Jackets' defense. LeTourneau would add a late 11-0 run in the first half, and a
Max Frels last second layup put the lead at 37-21 at the break.
Right out of the gate in the second half, Oglethorpe tried to get back in the game, scoring six consecutive points to force a YellowJacket timeout.
Afterwards, LeTourneau responded, and by the next media timeout, the lead had ballooned to 20, with Lynn scoring nine in that stretch.
It was all business after that for the YellowJackets, as they continued to frustrate the Stormy Petrel offense.
Jayden Prioleau,
Jak Kinder,
Dalton White, and Frels made late impacts, scoring a bucket each.
Malachi Dooley did it all for Oglethorpe in the loss, scoring 18, grabbing 10 boards, dishing three assists, and collecting a steal and a block.
