ABILENE, Texas -- Excellent game control by Hardin-Simmons befell LeTourneau men's hoops in Abilene on Saturday, as the YellowJackets lost 89-82 at the Mabee Complex.
Jackson Mayes (25) and
Teigan Edwards (21) provided some scoring for LeTourneau, while
Logan Brinkoeter recorded his second double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
In the first half, the Cowboys (5-5) would establish themselves, leading by as many as 15. The YellowJackets (4-2) were able to get closer before the halftime break, however, going on a 12-2 run to close the gap to five with 3:24 to go in the half. Hardin-Simmons would add four to their lead right before the break, though, making it a nine point game at halftime.
The Cowboys would continue to control the game for the early portion of the second half, increasing their lead to 13 with 10:46 remaining.Â
Then the Jackets rallied once more, rattling off eight straight, all scored by Edwards, to cut it to five with 7:40 to play.
The game continued to stay close, with the difference vacillating between four and eight for the next portion of the game. With 1:20 to play, LeTourneau tried to break through, getting a three from
Jak Kinder and a free throw from
Cooper Smith to make it a four-point game with 1:08 remaining.
Unfortunately, the YellowJackets would not get closer than that, as Hardin-Simmons converted several late free throws to seal it.
The Cowboys had all five starters reach double figures in scoring, led by Tyler Williams, who had 18 and eight rebounds.Â
