Mize Earns First Wins As Softball Sweeps Doubleheader

LONGVIEW, Texas -- Macey Mize earned her first wins as head coach and LeTourneau softball romped to two wins, 10-3 and 8-0, over visiting Southwestern.

Mize, in her first season as a head coach after serving as assistant coach for two seasons, pushed all the right buttons as the YellowJackets stormed to two wins.

GAME ONE: LeTourneau 10, Southwestern 3

Laney Taylor (1-1) threw a complete game to earn her first win of the season and the offense rolled to 10 runs in a game one victory. Sophia Ytuarte (0-2) was handed the loss for the Pirates.

Taylor finished her day throwing 96 pitches, striking out four and only walking one in a spectacular performance.

LeTourneau scored a run in each of the first two innings, with Kylie Grisham picking up an RBI. The third inning was a different story, however.

The offense exploded for seven runs in the third inning, starting with a Jaci Taylor single that drove in a pair of runs. Lilly Longoria added an RBI hit of her own, and then a bases-loaded walk from Maddie Flanery, a Grisham two-RBI single, and a Payton Bauer RBI ground out gave LeTourneau a lead they would not relinquish.

Jaden Wheeler drove in two runs for the Pirates and threw 3.2 innings of relief, only giving up one run.

GAME TWO: LeTourneau 8, Southwestern 0

Kirstin Ferguson threw six shutout innings and Leighton Landreth went 4-for-4 with four RBIs as the YellowJackets defeated the Pirates 8-0 in six innings.

Ferguson (1-1) gave up only five hits, striking out four and walking one on 80 pitches.

Madison Vela (0-2) got the loss, giving up eight runs (five earned) in five innings of work.

Landreth started the offense in the first inning, driving in Grisham on a double to right center field. Flanery added the second run on a double steal, swiping home while Grisham stole second.

Maddi Smith would add an RBI and in the third inning to help extend the lead, and Landreth brought home her second RBI in the fourth inning, making it 5-0.

Landreth then concluded the matter with a two-RBI single, ending the game on run rule.

Southwestern center fielder Erica Otto picked up two hits in three at-bats.
