Baseball Can't Hold off Sewanee in 5-4 Loss

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- The LeTourneau baseball team opened its spring break trip to Pensacola with a 5-4 loss to Sewanee on Friday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium.

LeTourneau (6-7) held a 4-2 lead entering the bottom of the ninth inning, but Sewanee (12-7) scored three runs and took advantage of two YellowJacket errors on the final play to win the game.

It was the first meeting all-time between the two programs.

Aman Patel had his best start of the young season on the mound. Patel went six innings and allowed just one run on seven hits and collected a pair of strikeouts.

The pitching effort allowed LeTourneau to grab an early lead, one it would hold until the final inning.

The YellowJackets scored twice in the top of the first as Luke Land delivered an RBI single to score Austin Wiederhold and Jack Kale followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. In the third, Kale produced another run as his single plated Wiederhold to give LeTourneau a 3-0 lead.

Sewanee got a run back in the fifth on Blake Pou's single, but Patel got out of the jam with a double play to end the Tiger threat.

LeTourneau led 3-2 into the ninth inning and tacked on one more. Zach Baker worked a leadoff, pinch-hit, walk and later came around to score on a passed ball. The YellowJackets threatened for more with the bases loaded and one out, but could not capitalize on the opportunity.

Sewanee made the most of its chance in the home half of the ninth. The first three Tigers reached base and another Pou single led to a run to trim the LeTourneau lead to 4-3. With one out and the bases loaded, Charlie Teel's fly ball to left was mishandled and a subsequent YellowJacket error allowed a second run to score to end the game.

Cruz Cox (0-1) picked up the loss for LeTourneau, while Austin Graber (2-0) received the win for Sewanee.

Dane Jones went 2-for-4 with a run and Wiederhold was 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Land drew three walks as YellowJacket batters worked nine walks.

Aidan Petrocco went 3-for-4 to lead the 11-hit attack for Sewanee. Taj Donald made the start on the mound and went five innings allowing three runs on five hits.
