Softball Falls to Celts in Houston

HOUSTON, Texas -- LeTourneau softball fell to St. Thomas in both games of the Tuesday afternoon doubleheader, 3-0 and 6-0.

The YellowJackets could not overcome strong pitching from the Celts, with the offense only mustering eight hits between the two games.

GAME ONE: St. Thomas 3, LeTourneau 0

LeTourneau fell to the Celts, 3-0, in game one of the doubleheader despite a strong outing from Laney Taylor (3-6), who threw all six possible innings and struck out one on an efficient 84 pitches.

The YellowJackets got six hits and two walks in the game, but they could not string them together for a rally to gain a comeback opportunity. Jaci Taylor led the way offensively with a pair of hits.

After going down 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning, LeTourneau got three runners on base in the top of the third, but a pair of runners caught stealing would kill the momentum.

The Celts would add the other two runs in the bottom of the third and sixth innings, and the YellowJackets could not manufacture any opportunities against St. Thomas hurler Allison Hughes (5-3) the rest of the way.

Hughes earned the win behind a complete game shutout, striking out four. Celts shortstop Lindsey Gonzalez went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

GAME TWO: St. Thomas 6, LeTourneau 0

LeTourneau fell behind early and could not recover, falling 6-0 in game two.

Victoria Sossaman (8-3), earned the win for St. Thomas behind a complete game shutout, while Kirstin Ferguson (2-5) was handed the loss for LeTourneau.

The YellowJackets only got three runners on base against Sossaman, and those base runners were scattered over three different innings, preventing a potential rally from occurring.

Maddie Flanery and Payton Bauer earned the two hits for LeTourneau, with Maddi Smith drawing the walk.

Ferguson struck out seven over 5.2 innings, while Paiton Altmiller closed out the pitching with a scoreless 0.1 innings.

For the Celts, Sossaman struck out six over her seven innings of work, and catcher Ana Zozaya racked up five RBIs on the day.
