Softball Drops Doubleheader at UMHB

BELTON, Texas -- The LeTourneau softball team battled back from a three-run deficit in game two, but was unable to complete the comeback as the YellowJackets fell in both games of a doubleheader at Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday in Belton.

LeTourneau (8-16, 0-2 ASC) fell 5-0 in the opener before losing 7-6 in the finale.

GAME TWO: Mary Hardin-Baylor 7, LeTourneau 6

LeTourneau trailed 6-3 entering the seventh inning, but scored three times to even the score. The host Crusaders had the final answer, though, on Jordan Iverson's walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh to give Mary Hardin-Baylor a 7-6 win.

LeTourneau totaled 12 hits in the loss, led by a 3-for-3 effort from Leighton Landreth. Kylie Grisham and Jenna Rosson had two hits apiece.

Rosson put the YellowJackets on the board first with an RBI single in the first inning that scored Maddie Flanery. Raina Doggett followed with an RBI single of her own to extend the lead to 2-0.

In the second, Landreth produced a sacrifice fly as the YellowJackets added to a 3-1 lead.

Mary Hardin-Baylor (17-7, 2-2 ASC) used a four-run fifth inning to grab a 6-3 lead.

Trailing by three in the seventh, LeTourneau would not go down without a fight. Grisham and Landreth singled to start the frame followed by an RBI double from Rosson to make it 6-4. With two outs and the bases loaded, Payton Bauer reached on a fielder's choice and a two-base error from UMHB allowed both Rosson and Landreth to score to tie the game at 6-6.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Crusaders answered. UMHB loaded the bases with one out and Iverson's fly ball to left field was deep enough to score the winning run.

Kensie Baldwin (1-2) picked up the loss in relief for LeTourneau, but pitched well. She allowed just one run on two hits in 2.2 innings. Kirstin Ferguson went four innings in her start.

Eileigh Whyte (8-3) got the win in relief for the Crusaders. Tori Skinner and Shorey Bguyen had two hits each in the win.

GAME ONE: Mary Hardin-Baylor 5, LeTourneau 0

Eileigh Whyte tossed a shutout and Mary Hardin-Baylor took a 5-0 victory over LeTourneau in game one of the doubleheader.

Rosson, Doggett, and Jenna Carter each had a hit in the loss for LeTourneau.

Bailey Frenzel hit two home runs and had three RBIs to lead the Crusaders as the hosts pulled away in the middle innings.

Laney Taylor (2-8) collected the loss in the circle for LeTourneau. Whyte (7-3) struck out four and allowed three hits in her seven innings.
