Baseball Blasts to DH Sweep at Hardin-Simmons

ABILENE, Texas -- The LeTourneau baseball team hit six home runs between two games and swept a doubleheader from Hardin-Simmons on Friday night at Hunter Field in ASC action. LeTourneau won the opener 15-9 before a 10-6 victory in the nightcap.

LeTourneau (17-13, 9-2 ASC) hit three homers in each game. Dane Jones hit two home runs in both games, giving him 11 over the last 10 games.

GAME ONE: LeTourneau 15, Hardin-Simmons 9

LeTourneau slugged three home runs and totaled 17 hits in a 15-9 victory in game one of Friday's doubleheader.

Jones was at it again. After hitting two home runs in Thursday night's series opener, the fifth-year player hit two home runs and was 4-for-5 with six RBIs and four runs scored in the win. Xander Nabors and Luke Land also had four hits apiece and combined for five RBIs and four runs scored.

Nabors got the scoring going with an RBI double in the first inning. LeTourneau then put up a seven-spot in the second inning behind a Jones grand slam that made it 6-0. Zach Baker, Land, and Jack Kale also had run-scoring hits in the frame as the YellowJackets led 8-0.

Jones' second home run came in the sixth inning, a two-run shot to left-center field, that made it 14-7.

Isaac Price also homered for the YellowJackets as he launched a solo blast in the sixth, his fifth of the season. Price was 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the game.

Jaxson Breedlove made his first start and went 1.2 innings. Zac Schneider (4-1) picked up the win in relief as he went two innings and struck out two.

Alex Carte (2-6) got the loss for Hardin-Simmons after allowing six earned runs in two innings. Jake Trapani had two doubles and went 3-for-5 with three RBIs in the loss.

GAME TWO: LeTourneau 10, Hardin-Simmons 6

The LeTourneau bats were on fire again as the YellowJackets scored 10 times on 11 hits to complete the doubleheader sweep with a 10-6 win.

Jones homered twice for a third straight game as he went 3-for-6 with four RBIs and four runs scored. He opened the scoring with a two-run homer to left field in the first inning and added a solo shot to center field in the third inning.

Jones has 13 home runs on the year and 54 in his career.

The first inning featured a pair of two-run homers for the YellowJackets. After Jones' blast, Land delivered a two-run shot of his own later in the inning to make it 4-0. The homer was his fifth of the year.

LeTourneau extended the lead to 7-0 in the second inning. Jones drove in Austin Wiederhold before an RBI single from Nabors and an RBI double from Land.

The YellowJackets added two runs late in the game. Price doubled home a run in the eighth before a Nabors triple in the ninth made it 10-5.

In the bottom of the ninth, Hardin-Simmons loaded the bases with one out, but Frank Maestri induced a double play to end the threat and complete the sweep. Maestri picked up his first save as he got the final two outs.

Dalton Pickett (2-1) threw 130 pitches in his 8.1 innings of work. The right-hander scattered 11 hits and struck out six to earn the win.

Brady Bennett notched the loss for Hardin-Simmons as he lasted just one inning in his start. It was the second time in the series a Cowboy starter failed to go beyond one inning.
