MARSHALL, Texas -- ETBU and LeTourneau softball concluded their four-game series in Marshall, with the No. 1-ranked Tigers proving too much for the Jackets, as they fell, 7-0 and 3-0.
Laney Taylor reached base four times in the doubleheader, including a pair of extra-base hits, but ETBU was able to hold the rest of the offense to just seven baserunners.
GAME ONE: ETBU 7, LeTourneau 0
A close game early did not go LeTourneau's way as the No. 1 Tigers used a six-run fifth inning to pull away late and win, 7-0.
The pitchers dominated the headlines early in this game, with
Laney Taylor and Avery Holland working around some traffic on the bases in the first four innings. Neither pitcher surrendered a run until ETBU's Mary Frances Ellis' bunt single brought home a run in the third inning.
After trading scoreless frames in the fourth, the Tigers offense put together their six-run fifth inning, which was enough to give them the win.
Taylor (4-12) struck out three in 4.2 innings of work, while
Paiton Altmiller threw 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.
Jenna Carter,
Jaci Taylor,
Rylie Shipp, and
Maddi Smith added hits for the YellowJackets' offense.
Holland (10-0) was awarded the win, and Ellis notched a pair of hits for the Tigers.
GAME TWO: ETBU 3, LeTourneau 0
Despite
Kirstin Ferguson's resilient, workmanlike effort, LeTourneau could not overcome the Tigers' pitching, falling by a 3-0 score in game two.
Ferguson (5-10) threw all six possible innings for the YellowJackets, working expertly through some grueling innings. She struck out one, and in total, gave up only four runs in 14 innings of work in the series to the excellent Tigers offense.
Laney Taylor had one of her better offensive performances of her career, recording two extra base hits and a walk in this game. One of those hits, a triple, was the first of her career.
Leighton Landreth and
Jaci Taylor also contributed a pair of hits, while
Jenna Rosson worked a walk.
Three quick runs proved the difference in this game, as Tigers starter Hannah Benivides (7-1) was dialed in, throwing all seven innings and striking out five. Tristen Maddox and Emma Bell had two hits apiece for ETBU's offense.
