Softball's Early Offensive Burst Enough To Earn Split With Comets

RICHARDSON, Texas -- LeTourneau softball was able to use an early offensive burst in game one to earn a split with UT Dallas in Richardson on Friday evening.

Laney Taylor threw another gem from the circle in game one as well, while Leighton Landreth added three hits, including a two-run homer, in the doubleheader.

GAME ONE: LeTourneau 3, UT Dallas 1

A three-run first inning was enough as the pitching and defense held off the Comets to earn a 3-1 win in game one.

Kylie Grisham and Leighton Landreth would provide the three runs, as Grisham drove home Jenna Carter on an RBI single, while Landreth followed immediately with a two-run shot to center field.

Laney Taylor (5-12), held it down the rest of the way with a masterful outing, scattering six hits and one run over all seven innings of play, striking out three.

Raina Doggett and Jaci Taylor also had a pair of hits each to help the offense.

Erika Fedak (2-3) was assigned the loss, while Claire Pollack provided the lone RBI. Madelyn Denn threw five scoreless innings of relief as well for UT Dallas.

GAME TWO: UT Dallas 5, LeTourneau 2

The Comets jumped out to a quick lead and held on the rest of the way, as LeTourneau fell, 5-2, in game two.

After Mikayla Hoffman's two-run homer in the first inning, Alexa Neilon responded with an RBI walk in the second inning to bring it back to one. Lexi Dodson would do the same with a sacrifice fly in the fourth, but that would be as close as they would get, as a late two-run inning gave the Comets just enough of a cushion.

Maddi Smith contributed two hits for LeTourneau, and Hannah Decker threw 4.1 innings of relief, giving up two runs and notching a strikeout.

Kirstin Ferguson (5-11) got the loss, while Allison Koch (4-5) earned the victory. Holly Selldin would add a homer of her own for UT Dallas in the second inning.
