LONGVIEW, Texas -- The LeTourneau baseball team secured a sweep of UTD in Friday's afternoon doubleheader at Conrad Vernon Field. Clutch hitting propelled the YellowJackets to a 3-2 win in game one, and a 14-10 win in game two.
GAME ONE: LeTourneau 3, UT Dallas 2
In game one of the doubleheader, a seven inning game,
Ryan Brewer put together a brilliant outing. Brewer pitched 4.0 innings, striking out seven, and allowing just one run.
Great pitching from both sides had the game scoreless until the top of the third inning, when the Comets took a 1-0 lead. This lead was short lived as the YellowJackets would answer in the bottom of the third. A
Zach Baker bunt single, followed by a
Dane Jones blast gave the Jackets a 2-1 lead.
Brewer would be relieved by
Clayton Holt in the fifth inning. Holt earned the win for the Jackets, pitching three innings, striking out four, and allowing just one run.
The Comets took back the lead in the fifth inning and held on all the way to the bottom of the seventh inning.
A collection of clutch at bats led the Jackets to a walk off win. It started with a
Hayden Norris single, which was followed by a
Brice Cagle hit-by-pitch, and
Zach Baker walk. All of this came to a climax with an
Austin Wiederhold walk-off sacrifice fly.
GAME TWO: LeTourneau 14, UT Dallas 10
Game two was an offensive frenzy with a combined 24 runs scored. UT Dallas started the game with their offense firing on all cylinders, propelling them to an early 5-0 lead.
The YellowJackets chipped away at the Comets big lead slowly but surely until they finally created a big lead of their own.
LeTourneau began chipping away at the lead in the fifth inning when
Xander Nabors launched a two-run homer, with the ball bouncing off the roof of the field house located beyond the left field fence. Two batters later, Issac Price blasted a two-run homer of his own over the left field fence.
The Jackets continued their heroic comeback in the sixth inning, with clutch at bats from Baker, who laid down a bunt single, Wiederhold, who drew a walk, and Jones, who ripped a two-RBI double down the left field line to tie the game, 8-8.
The game did not stay tied for long, as LeTourneau jumped out to a 14-8 lead in the seventh inning in which they scored six runs. These runs came from a Baker three RBI double, Baker scoring on a wild pitch, and a Nabors two RBI double.
Camden Miller earned the win out of the bullpen for the YellowJackets. Miller pitched 2.2 innings, struck out two, and did not allow a run.
Zac Schneider collected the save, pitching his way out of an inherited bases loaded jam in the top of the ninth. When Schneider entered the contest the bases were loaded with just one out. The first batter he faced hit a shallow fly ball to center, he then struck out the next batter to slam the door shut on the Comets.
