BROWNWOOD, Texas -- The LeTourneau softball team hit four home runs and scored 25 runs to sweep a doubleheader and complete a four-game series sweep of Howard Payne on Saturday in Brownwood.
LeTourneau took game one 13-1 before capping the sweep with a 12-1 victory in the finale.
LeTourneau (12-16, 4-2 ASC) outscored Howard Payne (6-18, 0-4 ASC) 62-6 in the four-game series. The YellowJackets scored double-digit runs in all four games and totaled eight home runs across the four games.
GAME ONE: LeTourneau 13, Howard Payne 1
LeTourneau scored five runs in the first inning and coasted to a 13-1 win in Saturday's first game.
The YellowJackets totaled 15 hits in the victory as six different players (
Maddie Flanery,
Jaci Taylor,
Leighton Landreth,
Maddi Smith,
Payton Bauer,
Alexa Neilon) all had two hits apiece.
Smith had the clutch hit in the first inning as her three-run home run gave LeTourneau a 5-0 lead. The homer was her third of the season. Taylor and Landreth also had run-scoring hits in the inning.
LeTourneau added two runs in the second, which included an RBI single from
Kylie Grisham that scored Flanery to make it 7-0. In the third,
Kirstin Ferguson, Neilon, and Taylor all had run-scoring hits as the lead extended to 11-0.
Landreth capped the scoring for LeTourneau in the fourth with a two-run homer, her third of the season, to make it 13-1.
Ferguson (5-6) went four innings in the win and struck out six.
Hannah Decker tossed a scoreless fifth inning.
Destiny Sanchez (2-8) earned the loss for Howard Payne.
GAME TWO: LeTourneau 12, Howard Payne 1
A five-run second inning and a five-run fifth inning propelled LeTourneau to a 12-1 win and the series sweep in Saturday's finale.
Jenna Rosson went 3-foir-3 with a home run and three RBIs, while
Raina Doggett, Grisham, and Flanery also had two hits each.
Rosson put the YellowJackets ahead for good in the second inning with a three-run home run that made it 3-0. It was Rosson's second home run of the season.
Flanery followed later in the inning with her first career home run, a two-run shot to right-center field, to extend the lead to 5-0. Flanery finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs.
In the five-run fifth, LeTourneau got RBI singles from
Rylie Shipp, Grisham, and Landreth to go ahead 12-1.
Laney Taylor (4-8) went all five innings in the circle to collect the win. She allowed just one run on six hits with four strikeouts.
Ava Aviles (2-7) received the loss for Howard Payne, while Madison Garza and Makayla Wesley had two hits each.
UP NEXT
LeTourneau returns home on Friday to open a four-game series with Hardin-Simmons (4 p.m. DH).
