Baseball Rallies, Takes Two from Howard Payne

MARSHALL, Texas -- The LeTourneau baseball team ran its win streak to six with a pair of victories over Howard Payne on Sunday in Marshall. The YellowJackets took game one, 7-3, before rallying for a 7-6 victory in game two.

LeTourneau (14-12, 6-1 ASC) has won six in a row and eight of the last nine games. Dane Jones homered in both games and an Austin Wiederhold RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning of game two gave the YellowJackets the lead for good.

GAME ONE: LeTourneau 7, Howard Payne 3

Jones hit a two-run home run in the first inning and LeTourneau never trailed in a 7-3 victory in Sunday's first game.

Jones hit his sixth homer of the year, a two-run shot to left-center field, in the first inning as LeTourneau grabbed a 2-0 lead. Jones finished 1-for-2 with two walks and two RBIs.

LeTourneau extended the lead to 3-0 in the fourth on an RBI single from Wiederhold. Howard Payne answered back with two runs in the top of the fifth, but Jaxson Breedlove escaped further damage with a strikeout to preserve the lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, LeTourneau tacked on four runs. Hayden Norris had an RBI single before a Blake Vice bases-loaded walk, a Zach Baker RBI ground out, and a Xander Nabors RBI single to make it 7-2.

Ryan Brewer (2-2) picked up the win as he struck out four and allowed just one run on zero hits in four-plus innings of work. Breedlove notched his first career save going the final 2.2 innings and striking out two.

Norris went 2-for-4 to lead the eight-hit attack for LeTourneau.

Daylan Bower (1-3) got the loss on the mound for Howard Payne. Seth Bowman homered and was 1-for-2 with two RBIs.

GAME TWO: LeTourneau 7, Howard Payne 6

LeTourneau trailed nearly the entire game before tying it in the seventh and Wiederhold's RBI single in the eighth gave the YellowJackets a 7-6 victory.

Wiederhold, Jones, Nabors, Luke Land, Isaac Price, and Baker all had two hits each as LeTourneau totaled 13 in the win.

LeTourneau trailed 5-2 in the sixth inning. Land hit a solo home run to right field to cut into the deficit and Prifce doubled home Jack Kale later in the inning to make it 5-4.

Down 6-4 in the seventh, LeTourneau evened the score. Jones hit an opposite field solo home run to make it 6-5 before a double steal with two outs allowed Nabors to scamper home with the tying run.

In the eighth, Wiederhold delivered a two-out RBI single to right field that plated Baker with the go-ahead run.

Cruz Cox notched his third save of the year by striking out the side in the ninth to seal the comeback win.

Dalton Pickett made the start and went five innings allowing three earned runs on 10 hits. Zac Schneider earned the win as he struck out five and did not allow an earned run in three innings of work.

Trevor Rangel (1-2) got the loss in relief for Howard Payne (7-16, 0-3 ASC).
