TO THE 'SHIP! Softball Ousts Hardin-Simmons, Heads to ASC Title Game

MARSHALL, Texas -- The No. 4 seeded LeTourneau softball team scored eight runs across three innings to knock off No. 2 seeded Hardin-Simmons, 8-4, in the ASC Tournament on Friday night in Marshall.

LeTourneau (18-26) will play in the ASC Tournament championship round for the first time in program history on Saturday. The YellowJackets will face No. 1 East Texas Baptist and will need to win twice to win the ASC title.

LeTourneau eliminated both Hardin-Simmons and Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday. It marks the second straight year that the YellowJackets have ousted both teams in the same day at the ASC Tournament.

Leighton Landreth went 3-for-3 with a grand slam to lead the 13-hit attack for the YellowJackets. LeTourneau scored two runs in the second and third innings before Landreth's grand slam in the fourth that made the final tally.

LeTourneau took the lead for good in the second inning. Maddie Flanery singled to right field that scored Lilly Longoria for the game's first run and Jaci Taylor brought home Jenna Carter on a fielder's choice for a 2-0 lead.

In the third, Maddi Smith delivered a triple down the right field line that plated both Payton Bauer and Landreth to extend the lead to 4-0.

Hardin-Simmons (32-10), who had swept a four-game series from LeTourneau during the regular season, got two runs back in the bottom of the third to make it 4-2.

In the fourth, LeTourneau put the game out of reach. Two singles sandwiched around an error loaded the bases for the YellowJackets and Landreth. The senior drilled a 2-1 pitch over the left field wall for a grand slam.

The homer was Landreth's team-leading ninth of the season. Hardin-Simmons threatened for a comeback in the fifth, but LeTourneau reliever Paiton Altmiller worked out of the jam to limit the Cowgirls to just one run.

Altmiller then retired the final six hitters in order between the sixth and seventh innings to seal the win and LeTourneau's trip to the title game.

Taylor, Bauer, Smith, and Carter all had two hits each in the win.

Kirstin Ferguson (7-12) went 4.2 innings in her start and notched the win. Altmiller finished with a line of 2.1 innings pitched and one hit allowed.

Hardin-Simmons starter Kelly Shackelford (2-3) picked up the loss as she allowed six earned runs over three innings.
