Men's Hoops Holds Off Centenary on the Road

SHREVEPORT, La. -- Max Frels had a season-high 18 points and Jackson Mayes poured in 22 points as the LeTourneau men's basketball team held off Centenary, 80-75, in SCAC action on Friday night inside the Gold Dome.

The win for LeTourneau (7-3, 2-0 SCAC) completes the season sweep over Centenary (1-9, 0-2 SCAC).

Frels totaled his season-high 18 points with six 3-pointers while collecting eight rebounds and three assists. Mayes went over the 20-point plateau for the seventh time this season with his 22 points. Branson Lynn added 12 points and five rebounds, while Logan Brinkoeter recorded his fifth double-double of the year with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Centenary opened the game with a 9-0 scoring run before LeTourneau chipped away at the deficit. A Brinkoeter 3-pointer at the 8:09 mark tied the game at 23 before an Alex Ferrell jumper moments later gave the YellowJackets their first lead of the night at 25-23.

LeTourneau went into the half with a 40-38 lead, despite connecting on just 31.6 percent from the field.

The YellowJackets held a slim lead for much of the second half before extending it late. Frels drained a 3-pointer with 8:59 remaining to give LeTourneau a 60-57 lead. It was the first of two key 3-pointers from Frels as he made another with 6:27 left followed by a Mayes triple that gave the YellowJackets a 68-58 lead -- the largest of the game.

Centenary briefly got within one possession with under 20 seconds left, but two free throws from Mayes capped the win.

LeTourneau connected on 39.7 percent (27-of-68) from the field, but made a season-high 13 3-pointers. The YellowJackets capitalized at the line going 13-for-16.

Jaden Braden led Centenary with 23 points and Kane Broussard had a doub;e-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Gents shot 45.8 percent (27-of-59) from the field with seven 3-pointers.

LeTourneau travels to Belton on Monday for its final non-conference game vs. Mary Hardin-Baylor (7 p.m.).
