LONGVIEW, Texas -- The LeTourneau men's soccer team exploded for five goals to pick up a win over Austin College, clinching the three-seed for the SCAC tournament.
The YellowJackets honored their seniors before the game and then dominated on the pitch, winning 5-0 over Austin Friday night at the Joyce Family Athletic Village.
LeTourneau (10-6-1, 6-2-1 SCAC) and Austin (4-10-2, 3-6 SCAC) started slowly in the first half but finished the half with sustained offensive pressure. In the 27th minute, Elias Arreguin delivered a perfect cross into the box for Bridge Mwambukiri, who blasted a right-footed shot into the bottom right corner to give LeTourneau a 1-0 lead.Â
Shortly after, in the 29th minute, Leandro Ferreira found a loose ball in the box and rocketed in a stunner with his right foot to give LeTourneau a 2-0 lead.Â
The YellowJackets kept scoring goals in the first half. In the 36th minute, Troy Ackerson drove down the right side of the box and crossed a ball to Colton Chalker, who used his head to knock in his fourth goal of the season, giving the YellowJackets a 3-0 lead.Â
Late in the period (39'), Joshua Van Wagener was called for a foul in the box, giving the Kangaroos a penalty kick. Matheus Braid took the penalty; however, on his senior night, Edson Camara Martinez made one of his five saves to stop the try and maintain the shutout.Â
The second half played out very similarly to the first half for LeTourneau, with a slow start followed by an offensive explosion. In the 66th minute, Chalker crossed a ball for Ferreira, who flew in to net his second goal of the match with a header to give LeTourneau a 4-0 lead. Ferreira's brace was his third of the season, all at home.Â
In the 69th minute, Chalker scored his second goal of the game on an awkward play in the box, where he poked the ball past Austin keeper Jayson Baldwin to give LeTourneau a 5-0 lead. Chalker's brace was the first of his career, and his five points (two goals, one assist) were also a career high.Â
The win marks the end of a historic regular season for LeTourneau men's soccer. For the first time in program history, the YellowJackets completed a perfect season at home with an 8-0 record. LeTourneau also clinched a top-three finish in conference play for the first time since 2002.Â
LeTourneau's 10 wins this season are the most the program has seen since 2010. Additionally, the YellowJackets six conference wins are the most since 2011.Â
Camara Martinez recorded his 11th career shutout, which is tied for third in the all-time program record book. The senior also picked up his 15th career win, which is the sixth most in program history. Baldwin played all 90 minutes in goal for the Roos and gathered four saves.Â
