Softball Splits Doubleheader at McMurry

ABILENE, Texas -- After a one-run loss in the opener, the LeTourneau softball team scored a season-high 12 runs on 16 hits to take game two, 12-1, in a doubleheader at McMurry on Friday in Abilene.

LeTourneau (3-4, 3-2 SCAC) will have a shot at clinching the series win on Saturday  at 12 p.m.

GAME TWO: LeTourneau 12, McMurry 1

A seven-run sixth inning broke open the game as LeTourneau coasted to a 12-1 victory in Friday's second game.

Rylie Shipp went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored while Maddie Flanery, Laila LaCapra, Jenna Carter, Raina Doggett, and Kylee Davis all had two hits in the win. Every position player had at least one hit for LeTourneau.

Bree Brege (1-1) was the beneficiary of the run support as she picked up her first win and threw her first complete game. Brege allowed one unearned run on eight hits with two strikeouts in the victory.

LaCapra produced an RBI single in the third inning to score Flanery and put LeTourneau ahead, 1-0. In the fourth, the YellowJackets added four runs to grab a 5-0 lead. Mandy Hoback had an RBI single before a run-scoring single from Natalie Noriega and an RBI triple from Flanery.

In the sixth, LeTourneau scored seven runs on six hits. Carter had an RBI single that scored Davis before four straight doubles from Shipp, Doggett, Taylor Gouge, and Davis helped put six more runs across.

Sophia Garza got the loss for McMurry in the circle after allowing five runs on 10 hits. 

GAME ONE: McMurry 3, LeTourneau 2

McMurry held off a LeTourneau rally in the seventh inning to take game one, 3-2.

Down 3-2 entering the seventh, LeTourneau's Brooke Bubert led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a single from LaCapra to put runners on first and third with two outs. LaCapra attemped to get into scoring position, but was thrown out trying to steal second to end the game.

McMurry scored twice in the first inning on an RBI double from Sophia Steele and a sacrifice fly from Marissa Cardenas to make it 2-0.

LeTourneau answered with a two-run third inning. Flanery produced an RBI single that scored Carter before Shipp singled home Flanery later in the inning to tie the game at 2-2.

Cardenas gave McMurry the lead for good with an RBI single in the bottom of the third.

Bubert (1-2) tossed six solid innings allowing three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts in the loss. Nyema Muhammad got the win in relief for McMurry after going the final four innings.

Shipp led LeTourneau with two hits. Flanery, LaCapra, Doggett, and Gouge all had one each.

UP NEXT

LeTourneau and McMurry play the rubber game of the series on Saturday (12 p.m.).
