Baseball Drops Midweek Contest at ETBU

MARSHALL, Texas -- A seven-run fifth inning was not enough for the LeTourneau baseball team to take down former conference rival East Texas Baptist in a 16-10 loss at Woods Field on Tuesday night.

It was the first of two meetings this season between LeTourneau (6-4) and ETBU (5-4). The teams will play in Longview on March 24.

LeTourneau gained a 10-7 lead in the fifth inning thanks to a seven-run frame. Spencer Alexander delivered a bases-loaded single to start the scoring in the frame before an RBI fielder's choice from Cody Brady and a pair of errors from the Tigers defense led to a seven-run outburst.

ETBU answered with five runs in its half of the fifth, capped by a Raef Wright three-run home run, to put the Tigers ahead 12-10. Two more home runs in the sixth sealed the win for ETBU.

LeTourneau grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on Jonah McDaniel's two-run blast to left field. The home run was McDaniel's second of the year.

Chris Savage added an RBI single in the third inning that briefly gave LeTourneau a 3-2 lead. Savage had two of LeTourneau's eight hits, while McDaniel finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Savage, McDaniel, and Zach Baker all scored twice.

Alexander made his second start of the season on the mound and went two innings with three strikeouts. Frank Maestri (0-1) got the loss in relief. Ryan Brewer tossed two shutout innings in his relief appearance.

ETBU's Tyler Bogusz (1-0) got the win after going the final four innings. Wright hit two home runs and was 2-for-4 with four RBIs to lead the Tigers offensively.
