Men's Hoops Falls to Concordia in SCAC Semifinals

CONWAY, Ark. -- The No. 1 Blue seed LeTourneau men's basketball team saw its season come to an end on Saturday afternoon with a 94-87 loss to No. 2 Gold seed Concordia Texas in the SCAC Tournament semifinals in Conway.

LeTourneau ends the year 17-9 overall and captured the Blue Division regular season title.

Concordia Texas (23-4) advances to the championship round to face No. 1 Gold seed St. Thomas on Sunday (12 p.m.).

LeTourneau put together a tremendous first half of basketball and took a nine-point lead (53-44) into halftime. Concordia answered in the second half and outscored the YellowJackets 50-34 to take the victory.

Jackson Mayes led LeTourneau with 24 points to go with six rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Mayes finishes his career with 1,126 points -- 19th all-time in program history. Teigan Edwards added 18 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. Cooper Smith totaled a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Alex Ferrell came off the bench to score 11 points.

The YellowJackets opened up a nine-point lead (35-26) in the first half as a layup from Mayes at the 6:49 mark capped a 9-2 run. The half finished with a flurry of buckets for LeTourneau as a Smith layup gave LeTourneau a 10-point lead and a Mayes 3-pointer in the final minute made it a 53-44 LeTourneau edge.

LeTourneau made nine 3-pointers in the first half and shot 46.2 percent (18-of-39) overall from the field.

Concordia immediately cut into the lead in the early minutes of the second, going on a 9-2 run to get within 55-53 with 16:55 remaining. Back-to-back baskets from Edwards and Max Frels stemmed the rally and extended the lead for the YellowJackets back to 59-53 with 16:24 left.

A Mayes 3-pointer gave LeTourneau a 10-point lead again (68-58) with 13:55 remaining.

Concordia put together its biggest run of the night at that point. The Tornados went on a 16-2 spurt over a nearly seven-minute stretch to go ahead 74-70 with a three-point play from Percy Green capping the stretch with 6:56 left.

The Tornados kept LeTourneau at bay over the final minutes and made free throws to seal the victory.

LeTourneau held the SCAC Player of the Year Joey Ramirez to just nine points, but Green had 29 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Tornados. Jaiden Gastile added 12 points. Concordia shot 47.8 percent (33-of-69) from the field with seven 3-pointers and a 21-of-32 effort at the line.

LeTourneau ended the night connecting on 40.3 percent (29-of-72) from the floor with 11 3-pointers and 18-of-20 from the free throw line.

LeTourneau recorded a winning record for the ninth time in the last 10 seasons and it was the eighth time in the same span the YellowJackets have won at least 17 games.
