LONGVIEW, Texas -- LeTourneau softball won a 4-2 pitching duel over the Centenary Ladies on Friday night at the Joyce Family Athletic Village.
The YellowJackets (5-12, 4-9 SCAC) took advantage of a three-run third inning to upend the Ladies (6-10, 6-4 SCAC) in the SCAC series opener.
Brooke Bubert (2-5) got the winning decision in her start, allowing one run on two hits and three walks and striking out four in four innings. Bubert was followed in relief by
Laynie Davis (1), who produced a three-inning save, allowing just one run.
Laila LaCapra was the sole player in the game with a pair of hits, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, while
Rylie Shipp plated two, hitting 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Maddie Flanery had two stolen bases in the win.
Flanery earned a leadoff walk for the Jackets, stole second, and found third via a wild pitch before Shipp brought her home on a groundout to open the scoring 1-0.
Shipp brought home Flanery on a single up the middle in the third, and was brought home by LaCapra just two batters later. LaCapra got caught in the basepath on the next pitch, allowing
Jenna Carter to come home from third to make it 4-0.
The Ladies would answer in the fourth inning, plating their first run on a single to left field. The scoring column remained quiet in the fifth before Centenary found one more run in the top of the sixth, cutting the lead to 4-2.
However, Davis induced three straight groundouts in the top of the seventh to clinch the series opener for LeTourneau.
Dixie Williams (2-1) was hit with the loss, allowing all four YellowJacket runs in her three-inning start.
