Softball Takes Series Finale to Split DH with Ozarks

LONGVIEW, Texas -- The LeTourneau softball team responded from a game one loss on Saturday to take the second game, 7-3, in the series finale vs. Ozarks at the Joyce Family Athletic Village.

LeTourneau (9-15, 6-12 SCAC) fell in the first game, 12-6, before salvaging the final game of the series against Ozarks (13-8, 9-6 SCAC).

It was the annual For the Heroes Game as LeTourneau honored Hubert Brast, a veteran of two wars and the great-grandfather of LeTourneau freshman Laila LaCapra.

GAME TWO: LeTourneau 7, Ozarks 3

LeTourneau scored three runs in the first and led throughout to take the series finale, 7-3.

Rylie Shipp went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Kylee Davis had two RBIs in the win.

LeTourneau got it started with a three-run first as LaCapra scored on an Ozarks error to put the YellowJackets up 1-0. Later in the inning, a pair of RBI ground outs from Shipp and Davis led to two more runs and a 3-0 lead.

Shipp came up with the clutch hit in the second inning as her two-out single to left-center field plated both LaCapra and Natalie Noriega to extend the lead to 5-0.

Leading 5-1 in the fourth, the YellowJackets tacked on two more runs. Davis delivered an RBI single and Taylor Gouge followed with a run-scoring single to make it 7-1.

That was more than enough for Laynie Davis in the circle. Davis (2-2) notched the complete-game win as she allowed just two earned runs on eight hits in her seven innings of work.

Kendall Lynch picked up the loss for Ozarks as she went 3.1 innings with five earned runs. Jorden Hodges had two of the eight hits for Ozarks.

GAME ONE: Ozarks 12, LeTourneau 6

A late-inning surge from visiting Ozarks led the Eagles to a 12-6 win in Saturday's first game.

LeTourneau out-hit Ozarks, 14-8, but the Eagles used a three-run fifth inning and a four-run sixth inning to break a 5-5 tie and take the game to clinch the series.

Jenna Carter went 4-for-4 while Shipp, Kylee Davis, Raina Doggett, and Laynie Davis all had two hits apiece.

LeTourneau trailed 5-1 entering the bottom of the fourth before scoring four times to tie the game. Maddie Flanery had an RBI single to plate pinch-runner Tessa Reves before Laynie Davis scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-3. Laila LaCapra produced an RBI ground out, and Carter followed with an RBI triple to tie the game.

Ozarks had the answer as the Eagles scored three in the fifth, with the key hit coming from Emma Reynolds as she plated two with a single. In the sixth, Ozarks scored four more times to provide the final tally.

Brooke Bubert made the start and went four total innings with four earned runs. Campbell Marler (1-3) got the loss in relief.

Amber Bryant (1-0) received the win and Bailee Cowell earned the three-inning save for Ozarks. Reynolds and Grace Price each had two hits.
