Carter's Walk-Off Win Earns Softball Midweek Sweep

LONGVIEW, Texas -- Jenna Carter's walk-off double in game two clinched a midweek doubleheader sweep for LeTourneau softball over Mary-Hardin Baylor.

LeTourneau (11-15) scored three in its final trip to the plate to earn a 6-3 win in game one, before scoring three in the bottom of the seventh of game two to ultimately win in walk-off fashion in front of a packed Joyce Family Athletic Village.

Carter and Laila LaCapra each had four hits and five RBIs between the doubleheader. Both played hero as well, as it was LaCapra's three-run double in the bottom of the sixth that gave LeTourneau the edge in game one.

Natalie Noriega also went 4-for-7 on the day, while Rylie Shipp hit 3-for-5.

GAME ONE: LeTourneau 6, Mary-Hardin Baylor 3

Laynie Davis allowed just two baserunners en route to three shutout innings to earn the win in relief.

Maddie Flanery hit 2-for-3 with a walk, swiping two bags and scoring three times. LaCapra plated four runners on a pair of hits, and Carter had two RBIs as well.

The Crusaders (11-15) led 2-0 in the first frame after Ryleigh Mills plated two on a double down the left field line, but a Carter sacrifice fly brought home Flanery to cut the lead to one after the first.

LeTourneau flipped the script in the third inning, as LaCapra sliced one down the right field line to tie the game before Carter roped a ball down the opposite line to give the YellowJackets a 3-2 lead.

UMHB answered in the fourth inning, as Bralyn Belk pulled one just deep enough into foul territory to plate a runner on a sacrifice fly to tie the game 3-3.

After ending the top of the sixth with a strikeout and a caught stealing on the same pitch, LeTourneau had all the momentum heading into the home-half.

Three singles gave LaCapra bases loaded with two outs, in which she responded by poking one to no-mans-land behind first base, bringing home all three runs and giving the Jackets a 6-3 lead.

Davis shut the door in the final inning, largely thanks to two lineouts in the glove of a diving Shipp at second base, earning LeTourneau the opener win.

Chloe Booth (2-3) allowed LaCapra's go-ahead double, earning the loss.

GAME TWO: LeTourneau 6, Mary Hardin-Baylor 5

In the second-half of the twin-bill, LeTourneau managed 14 hits, including four from Carter and three from both LaCapra and Noriega.

All was quiet until the fourth inning, when UMHB had three come across the plate, before LaCapra plated Davis on a single to center to cut the lead to 3-1.

Noriega singled up the middle an inning later to trim the lead to one, but the Crusaders bounced back in the sixth. Belk recorded an RBI groundout, followed by Jordan Iverson giving UMHB a 5-2 lead on a double.

Carter lined a triple to the opposite field in the home-half of the sixth, scoring Tessa Reeves in the process and trimming the lead to 5-3 before the final inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, back-to-back singles and a later walk from Reeves brought LaCapra to the plate with bases loaded and two outs.

After LaCapra rolled over on one to short, Noriega was able to beat out the throw to third, allowing the first run of the inning to come home.

Carter then capped the day, smoking a double to left center, plating the tying and winning runs, and earning LeTourneau's first walk-off win of the season.

Brooke Bubert (4-6) earned the win, allowing three runs -- two earned -- in five total innings in the circle. Ella Gamblin (1-2) allowed all six runs of LeTourneau's in 5.2 innings of relief.

The Crusaders were led by Addy Todd, hitting 3-for-7 with two runs scored.
