LONGVIEW, Texas -- After opening the season with nine straight matches away from home, the LeTourneau men's tennis team opened the home schedule with a critical, 4-3, victory over Texas Lutheran in SCAC play on Friday.
LeTourneau (6-4, 3-2 SCAC) moved ahead of Texas Lutheran (5-4, 2-3 SCAC) in the league standings and into the top-five in the conference with the win.
The YellowJackets took command early with a sweep in doubles play to go ahead 1-0 in the match.
Andrew Reiman and
Fernando Vazquez earned a 7-5 win over Kadon Sullins and Ajonte St. Ville at the top flight, while
Timothy Black and
Zach Farris were 6-4 winners at No. 2 over Cash Herrera and Jackson Leslie.
Black and Farris moved to 8-2 as a duo on the season, while Reiman and Vazquez are now 7-3 as a tandem.
Hayden Harry and
Diego Maldonado eased past Logan Randall and Barrett Spaar, 6-2, at the No. 3 spot. Harry and Maldonado also moved to 7-3 for the season.
Farris and Reiman dispatched their opponents at the top two flights in singles. Farris won over Herrera 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 1 spot and Reiman was a 6-0, 6-3 winner over St. Ville at No. 2.
Texas Lutheran rallied in the match with wins at Nos. 5 and 6. Maldonado fell in three sets to Spaar 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5 and Harry was bested by Leslie at No. 6, 6-1, 6-3.
The visiting Bulldogs tied the match as Sullins outlasted Vazquez in three sets, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 3 flight. Black had the answer for LeTourneau as he battled for a three-set win over Randall at the No. 4 spot 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 to clinch the win for the YellowJackets.
