LONGVIEW, Texas --
Jake Morris' walk-off single in game one of the Saturday doubleheader clinched the series for LeTourneau Baseball, before a shutdown bullpen performance gave the Jackets the SCAC series sweep.
LeTourneau (17-17, 14-10 SCAC) came back from a three-run deficit at the stretch to take game one 8-7Â at Conrad-Vernon Field, followed by
Colt McDowell picking up his first career win in the 8-5 series finale over the Dallas Crusaders (9-14, 7-17 SCAC).
Chris Savage had a historic day at the plate, hitting a single-game program record four doubles in game one. Savage hit 7-for-10 between the twin-bill, collecting a pair of RBIs and two runs scored.
Morris managed a 4-for-6 day, highlighted by his walk-off single over the right fielder's head to clinch the much-needed series win for LeTourneau.
GAME ONE: LeTourneau 8, Dallas 7
Ben Mayorga (1-1) notched his first career win in the opener after throwing two innings of flawless baseball in the eighth and ninth.
Savage led with his four doubles, while Morris went 3-for-5, scoring twice and swiping two bags.
Jack Kale hit 2-for-4, plating a pair of runners and scoring one run himself, and
Jordan Baynes reached base three times.
The Crusaders struck first loudly, with a leadoff homer by Dylan Goddard.
Goddard made good on his second trip to the plate as well, bringing home two on a single to center, followed by Reed Morales scoring on a wild pitch, and the Crusaders quickly led 4-0 after two innings.
The Jackets brought home their first runs in the third innings, via a sacrifice fly from Kale and an RBI double to left center by Savage.
LeTourneau tied things up at 4-4 an inning later as
Seth Hudson scored on a throwing error and Morris came home on a Baynes groundout.
The Crusaders regained the lead in the fifth inning, though, scoring three runs on three hits and a fielding mishap.
Despite trailing 7-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh, LeTourneau slowly chipped away.
Kale smacked a full-count fastball to center field to bring home
Cody Brady in the seventh.
Morris' high IQ baserunning brought LeTourneau within one in the eighth, tagging on a foul flyout to third base, giving a sacrifice fly to
Austin Wiederhold.
Kale led the bottom of the ninth off with a single, followed by Savage's record-breaking fourth double to bring Kale to third.
Blake Vice was intentionally walked to load the bases, but Hudson came through with a sacrifice fly to tie the game.
Two pitches later, Morris got every bit of the baseball, sending the Jackets out in style.
Blake Goodridge struck out eight in his 4.2-inning no-decision start, and
Will Podsednik threw 2.1 scoreless innings to relieve him.
Loss was accredited to Dominic Gill (1-1), who pitched the ninth inning for Dallas.
GAME TWO: LeTourneau 8, Dallas 5
McDowell (1-2) collected his first career win -- backed by some early offense -- in the series finale.
McDowell allowed five runs on seven hits and just one walk in 5.2 innings, striking out three along the way.Â
After Dallas plated two in the first inning, McDowell closed out the inning, starting a run of 13 consecutive batters retired. Dallas did not return to the basepaths until the sixth inning.
Savage once again was the headliner of the box score, going 3-for-5, while Hudson, Vice, and
Zach Baker added two hits each. Baker stole two bases in the win as well.
After Dylan Roscopf tripled down the right field line to plate two runs, Kale brought home Wiederhold on a groundout in the home half to make the score 2-1.
The LeTourneau offense found runs in each of the first five innings.
In the second, Vice scored on a throwing error, and Morris plated Hudson on a double down the right field line, followed by Savage scoring on a two-out error by Dallas.
After a three-run fourth inning,
Cody Brady capped the run total at eight with his sacrifice fly in the fifth.
The Crusaders attempted a comeback, scoring three runs in the sixth, but the LeTourneau bullpen halted them in their tracks.
Camden Miller struck out four, allowing just one hit in 2.1 innings, while
Cruz Cox clinched his seventh save of the year, tossing a scoreless ninth inning.
Cody Jenkins (0-3) gave up the lead in the second inning, being handed the loss.
On the day, Dallas was led by Goddard and Roscopf at the plate. Goddard hit 4-for-9 with three RBIs and three runs scored, while Roscopf went 3-for-8 with three RBIs and a run.
