Softball Drops Opener to No. 13 St. Thomas

LONGVIEW, Texas -- LeTourneau softball fell 6-1 in the series opener to No. 13 St. Thomas in the SCAC series opener on Thursday night at the Joyce Family Athletic Village.

Jenna Carter launched a solo homer in the bottom of the first to account for LeTourneau's (11-18, 6-13 SCAC) lone run of the game.

Rylie Shipp, Laila LaCapra, Laynie Davis, and Kylee Davis accounted for the YellowJackets' other four hits.

Victoria Sossaman (13-4) tossed a complete game for the visiting Celts (22-5, 20-2 SCAC), striking out five en route to a winning decision.

Bree Brege (3-6) allowed six runs -- two earned -- through her five-inning start, receiving the loss.

St. Thomas' Chloe Bennett singled through the left side to plate Rebecca Archibald in the first to open the game in scoring.

Carter's solo-shot tied the game in the home-half, but it was all Celt from there on out.

St. Thomas added a pair in the top of the second, and one more run in each of the next three innings. Kianah Johnson's RBI-double in the fifth inning gave the Celts their 6-1 lead.

Bennett went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored to lead St. Thomas at the plate.
