Shipp Makes History as Softball Sweeps DH

LONGVIEW, Texas -- LeTourneau softball opened up the final regular season weekend with a doubleheader sweep of the Schreiner Mountaineers on Friday at the Joyce Family Athletic Village.

LeTourneau (17-22, 12-17 SCAC) led wire-to-wire in its 8-1 game one victory, before a six-run sixth inning propelled the Jackets to an 8-2 game two victory.

Rylie Shipp went 3-for-7 with three RBIs on the day. Shipp's third-inning single to left center in game one etched her name in the record books. With now 55 hits on the campaign, Shipp holds the program's single-season hits record.

Laila LaCapra had a five-hit day for the Jackets, while Kylee Davis and Taylor Gouge added four hits apiece between the twin-bill.

GAME ONE: LeTourneau 8, Schreiner 1

The YellowJackets struck early and often, posting all eight runs across the first three innings.

Laynie Davis (6-5) twirled a complete game, allowing one unearned run across seven innings pitched, and held Schreiner (12-27, 9-20 SCAC) to just four hits and one walk.

LaCapra went 4-for-4 in the win with a pair of RBIs.

All three of Shipp's RBIs came in game one, and Maddie Flanery hit 2-for-3, plated one, and scored twice.

Jenna Carter poked a single down the right field line in the first to plate Flanery and make the score 1-0.

LeTourneau erupted for four runs in the second inning to break open its lead.

Shipp started the scoring with a bases-loaded single, and one more came home on Carter's fielder's choice to shortstop. LaCapra capped the inning with a two-RBI knock to left center, making things 5-0.

The Mountaineers scored one in the top of the third, but it didn't stop LeTourneau's momentum, as the third inning saw three runs from the Jackets.

Flanery singled up the middle with runners on the corners to make it 6-1, and Shipp's historic 54th hit plated a pair, extending the lead to 8-1.

Davis held the Mountaineers to just two hits across the final four innings, securing the opener victory.

The loss was attributed to Olivia Montoya (4-10), who allowed all eight LeTourneau runs in her three-inning start.

GAME TWO: LeTourneau 8, Schreiner 2

After Schreiner took the lead in the fifth, LeTourneau ran away with the series with a six-run sixth inning.

Brooke Bubert (7-7) tied a career-best five strikeouts in the complete-game win and stifled the Mountaineers to just two runs.

K. Davis had her second three-hit game of the season, and Gouge went 3-for-3, scoring twice and driving in one run.

After a quiet start, L. Davis roped a sacrifice fly to center field in the fourth to plate the first run of the game in Gouge.

Following the 1-0 lead, Schreiner bounced back with a two-run single from Isabel Moreno to capture their first lead of the day and make it 2-1.

In the home half of the fifth inning, Natalie Noriega tied it at 2-2 with a bases-loaded single up the middle.

After Bubert worked out of a jam in the top of the sixth, LeTourneau exploded for six runs to shut the door on the series.

The scoring began when LaCapra's opposite field single gave the Jackets the lead, followed by Gouge getting plunked with bases loaded.

One batter later, K. Davis' bases-clearing double opened the lead up as three runs scored to make the score 7-2, and Davis herself jogged home on a throwing error to shut the door on the series.

Anyssia Mendoza (7-10) pitched a complete game for the Mountaineers, receiving the loss.

Moreno, Zoe Salinas, and Sarah Almazan all had three hits on the day for Schreiner.
