SUGAR LAND, Texas -- The LeTourneau baseball team took the first game on Friday, 6-5, over St. Thomas before dropping the series finale, 12-6, in SCAC action at Constellation Field.
LeTourneau moved to 14-17 on the year and 11-10 in SCAC play. St. Thomas (11-19, 11-13 SCAC) won the series after taking Thursday night's game.
GAME ONE: LeTourneau 6, St. Thomas 5
LeTourneau held off a ninth-inning rally from St. Thomas to take Friday's first game, 6-5.
The YellowJackets never trailed in the game as LeTourneau scored three runs in the sixth to break a scoreless tie and then added three in the ninth to build a lead.
Cody Brady went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while
Chris Savage was 2-for-5 with four RBIs in the win.
A scoreless game into the sixth, LeTourneau broke through with three runs. Brady plated
Austin Wiederhold with an RBI double and Savage followed with a two-run double to make it 3-0.
St. Thomas picked away at the margin with two in the seventh, but LeTourneau added three in the ninth for a 6-2 lead. Savage was in the middle of it again in the ninth with a two-run single after
Jack Kale had singled home
Seth Hudson.
The host Celts scored three runs in the ninth and had runners at second and third with two outs, but LeTourneau closer
Cruz Cox got Miguel Acosta to ground out to end the game.
Cox notched his sixth save of the season as he recorded the final two outs.
Blake Goodridge (3-2) was strong on the bump in picking up his third win of the year. Goodridge went seven innings allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts.
Kaden Bertrand (2-6) got the loss for St. Thomas.Â
Wiederhold, Kale, and
Blake Vice all had two hits for the YellowJackets.
GAME TWO: St. Thomas 12, LeTourneau 6
St. Thomas used a five-run sixth inning to break open a close game and take the series finale, 12-6.
Brady went 4-for-5 to lead LeTourneau's 12-hit attack, while Kale had two hits and two RBIs.
LeTourneau got on the board first with an RBI double from Savage in the first inning that scored Brady. St. Thomas answered with one in the first and three in the second to go ahead 4-1.
LeTourneau got within 4-3 in the fourth with an RBI single from Wiederhold and a run-scoring single from Kale. In the fifth, LeTourneau trimmed the deficit again to 6-4 on an infield single from
Luke Land and an error.
St. Thomas batted around in the sixth to score five runs on just one hit to go ahead 12-4. Jon Torres had a two-run double to highlight the inning.
Colt McDowell (0-2) got the loss for LeTourneau.
Ben Mayorga threw 2.1 scoreless innings of relief to finish the game.
Micheal Martinez (3-2) collected the win as he went six innings and struck out eight. Justin Ogle had three hits and three RBIs for the Celts.
UP NEXT
LeTourneau returns to Conrad-Vernon Field on April 10 to face Dallas (7 p.m.).
