No. 16 Men's Golf Opens With Strong Round at NCAA Championships

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. -- The No. 16-ranked LeTourneau men's golf team opened the NCAA Division III Championships by firing a 4-over, 292 in the first round at the par-72 El Campeon course at Mission Inn Resort.

LeTourneau is in a tie for 10th overall. Although LeTourneau was able to complete its opening round, severe weather in the area ultimately led to the suspension of the rest of the round. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps leads the field after a 4-under, 284.

Kaiden Schneider and Trey Cates each shot even-par, 72 to lead the way for LeTourneau. The YellowJackets' 4-over round marked the best round as a team for LeTourneau at the NCAA Championships in program history. LeTourneau is making its fourth straight appearance at the national championships.

LeTourneau opened the round strong as four YellowJacket golfers birdied the par-5, 10th hole to begin the day. The YellowJackets had the third-most birdies (16) of any team in the field on Tuesday.

Cates opened his even-par round with three birdies in his first nine holes as he was 3-under at the turn. Cates finished with five birdies on the day and is currently tied for 28th in the field.

Schneider, who is playing in his fourth straight national championship, also birdied the first hole of the day and tallied five in his round to lead the YellowJackets. The senior's round of 72 marked his career best round at the NCAA Championships.

Rafa Torres and Owen Prewitt each shot 2-over, 74 in the first round. Torres birdied his first hole and tallied three on the day, while Prewitt also birdied his tournament-opening hole and recorded three for the round. Both players are currently tied for 79th.

Brody Holmlund finished round one with a 7-over, 79 to complete the YellowJacket golfers.

Kenyon's Adrian Jordan currently holds the individual lead after shooting a 5-under, 67.
