Baseball Stays Alive at SCAC Tournament

CLEBURNE, Texas -- Chris Savage homered twice and Blake Vice added a two-run shot as the No. 2 seed LeTourneau baseball team staved off elimination with a 7-5 win over No. 5 seed Hendrix on Saturday night at La Moderna Field in Cleburne.

LeTourneau (24-18) dropped into an elimination game after suffering a 17-4 loss to No. 3 seed Concordia Texas on Saturday afternoon.

LeTourneau will face No. 1 seed Texas Lutheran in an elimination game on Sunday at 3 p.m. at La Moderna Field in Cleburne.

GAME TWO: LeTourneau 7, Hendrix 5

Savage homered twice and had three RBIs, while Vice had a two-run homer and LeTourneau held off Hendrix, 7-5, to move on in the SCAC Tournament.

Savage went 3-for-5, Vice 2-for-4, and Zach Baker 2-for-4 in the win for LeTourneau.

Blake Goodridge (4-2) was outstanding in his start. The left-hander went seven innings for the third time this season and allowed just one earned run on four hits with eight strikeouts. Goodridge threw 100 pitches in his quality start.

Savage put the YellowJackets on the board with a solo homer to lead off the fourth inning. Vice followed later in the inning  -- his eighth of the year -- with a two-run blast to left field to make it 3-0. Savage then homered, a two-run shot to left field, in the fifth to extend the lead to 5-1. The two homers gives Savage eight on the year. It was the 11th time in SCAC Tournament history a player had hit two home runs in a game.

LeTourneau extended the lead to 7-2 with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Austin Wiederhold drew a bases-loaded walk -- his 39th base on balls of the year to break a program record -- in the sixth inning before Luke Land delivered an RBI single in the seventh.

Hendrix (22-21) rallied for three runs in the eighth to close the gap to 7-5. The inning could have been worse, but LeTourneau reliever Camden Miller induced a double play to end the threat and keep the YellowJackets in front.

Cruz Cox shut the door in the ninth to earn his program season-record ninth save.

Evan Williams (1-1) got the loss for Hendrix. Eight different Warriors hitters recorded one hit.

GAME ONE: Concordia 17, LeTourneau 4

A Jake Morris grand slam in the second inning brought life to LeTourneau, but the YellowJackets could not slow down Concordia in a 17-4 loss in the SCAC Tournament opener.

Morris launched his first collegiate homer, a grand slam to right field in the second inning that brought LeTourneau within 8-4.

Concordia (27-15) scored two runs in the first and six in the second to open an 8-0 lead. The Tornados tacked on eight runs over the final three innings to pull away for the run-rule win.

Samuel Ortiz hit a leadoff solo home run in the first and had two homers in the victory. Jake Runnells (1-2) got the win in relief for Concordia as he tossed the final 6.1 innings.

Austin Wiederhold and Morris each had two hits for LeTourneau. Clayton Holt (6-2) was hit with the loss in his start.
