Zakarius Wells

Zakarius Wells was named an assistant coach at LeTourneau University prior to the 2019-20 season.

In addition to his position with the YellowJackets, Wells serves as the head boys basketball coach at St. Mary's High School in Longview. 

In 2020-21, Wells was part of a staff whose team went 7-4 overall, 5-2 in the American Southwest Conference in a pause-centered season. The YellowJackets qualified for the ASC Championship Tournament for the sixth straight year. Deonte Jackson was named the league's ASC East Division co-Freshman of the Year, a First Team All-ASC East choice and ASC East All-Freshman Team selection. Andrew Eberhardt was named to the ASC East Second Team. Kyle Matthews earned ASC East All-Defensive Team honors. John Argue was an Honorable Mention ASC East pick. Isaac Stolzenburg joined Jackson on the ASC East All-Freshman Team. The Jackets met five Division I opponents in exhibition games, including NCAA Tournament qualifier Texas Southern, Rice, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin State and New Mexico.

In 2019-20, Wells was part of team that went 23-6, winning the ASC Championship Tournament for the first time in program history. The YellowJackets earned their second NCAA Tournament berth in program history. Nate West was named the NCAA Division III National Player of the Year, while also being selected as a First Team All-American. 

Wells joined the YellowJackets coaching staff in 2018-19 as a strength and conditioning coach. He came to LeTourneau from Evergreen High School in Seattle, Washington, after a short stint at Central Arizona College in Coolidge, Arizona. 

As a player, Wells averaged 7.4 points and 3.7 rebounds with the YellowJackets during his senior season in 2015-16. He scored a career-high 24 points on 10 of 14 shooting against Belhaven, while also grabbing 11 rebounds to record his first career double-double. Known as a defensive specialist, Wells was tasked with guarding the opposing teams' top players. 

Prior to LeTourneau, he played for Central Arizona, where he averaged 8.7 points and 3.1 rebounds per game.

Wells was an all-state selection as a senior at Evergreen High School, where he averaged 18 points and nine rebounds per game during his career.Â
