Edwin Raudales launched a shot from 30 yards out, 3:08 into overtime, to lead the YellowJackets men's soccer to a 4-3 overtime win over Ozarks on Saturday night at the Joyce Family Athletic Village.
With the win, LeTourneau improves to 4-9-1 overall and 2-3 in the ASC; meanwhile, Ozarks falls to 5-5-2 overall and 1-3-1.
The Raudales goal spoiled a comeback effort by the visitors, who had scored three times in the second half including a goal in the final 25 seconds of regulation. LeTourneau built a 3-0 lead but that did not phase the visitors. LETU went ahead in the 25
th minute when sophomore
Mario Lopez fired a shot in the upper right of the corner, following a pass from
Josh Bishop. With the opening half coming to a close, the YellowJackets added to its lead when graduate student
Patrick Tchekane picked up a rebound of a shot by sophomore
Martin Pflaum with eight seconds to go for a 2-0 advantage.
Â
Momentum stayed in favor of LeTourneau in the second half when freshman
Adam Schultz scored on a breakaway after a pass from senior
Hunter Hembrough in the 53
rd minute. As the offensive provided fireworks, not to go unnoticed was the strong play of the LETU defense – goalkeeper
Patrick Barba III, defenders
Nick Novak,
Jay Huemoeller,
Xavier Scarlett and midfielders,
Eric Reyes,
Hunter Swift and
Raul Saldana – kept the Eagles offense in check. Barba had 11 saves between the posts but it was an aggressive defense by LETU that disrupted the rhythm for Ozarks.
The Ozarks offense managed to break free on a pair of scrambles in the 56
th and 61
st minute when Marcus Aldaba found the back of the net to cut the LETU lead to 3-2. With the YellowJackets holding a one-goal lead and the clock winding down, the Eagles' Shaun Keane sent the match into overtime when he headed in a goal just past Barba with 25 seconds left in regulation to tie the contest at 3.
Early into the extra session, a goal by Ozarks was waived off because of an offsides call which sent the ball over to LeTourneau. As the YellowJackets' offense began to assemble, following a Ozarks foul, Raudales sent in the game-winning goal which surprised the 213 in attendance as well as the participants.
