Men's Soccer: Mario Lopez Scores Game Winner in 3-2 Win Over UMHB

LeTourneau junior Mario Lopez picked the right time to score his first goal of the 2014 season. The junior from Longview picked up a deflection for a quick touch from 40 yards out past the goalkeeper for the game-winning goal in the 64th minute to propel the LeTourneau University men's soccer team to a 3-2 win over Mary-Hardin Baylor on Friday night.

"I am really excited about my team's performance," said an excited head coach Matthew Haesecke. "They came up big when we needed it the most."

The YellowJackets (4-10-1, 2-4-1 ASC) hungry for a spot in the upcoming ASC Tournament quickly got on the board with two goals by sophomore Adam Schultz. The crafty forward from Plano put LETU ahead 1-0 in the 2nd minute when he picked up a pass from sophomore Hunter Swift down the line for the early goal. He added his second goal of the half when he sent one to the back of the net from 18 yards out. Despite the quick goals by Schultz, he gave the Cru defense fits throughout the contest.

Mary-Hardin Baylor (5-6-2, 2-2-2 ASC) rallied to tie the game when Logan Keeler scored in the 38th minute and Nathaniel Fagnant scored on a free kick in the 57th minute. The equalizer by Fagnant was deflected through the box and slid underneath the reach of LETU goalkeeper Miguel Cabrera.

With the game at 2, LETU rallied to set the stage for the game-winning goal by Lopez in the 64th minute. For Lopez, it is the third-consecutive year that he has had a game-winning goal.

LETU was out shot by the Cru, 19 to 11 including a 10-4 advantage in the final 45 minutes. Cabrera had eight saves for his second career win and Schulz led the offensive attack with four shots. It is the first win by LETU over UMHB since the Cru were No. 7 in the nation in a 3-2 win on September 17, 2010 in Longview.

The YellowJackets resume ASC action on Saturday when they host Concordia at the LETU Soccer Complex at 6 p.m.
